Hello All,
I have an SME box as our server and gateway. It is also the DNS server. Our local domain is matrixtooling.com and our externally hosted website is www.matrixtooling.com So we setup a hostname for www and pointed it to the IP address of our hosting company ( static IP ). A couple of days ago it stopped working. Now no matter what I do I can't get to our website from inside the domain. The IP address is correct but I can't ping it or anything. All other traffic is working normally and a computer outside of the domain works completely normal. Any ideas on the best setup for this scenario or what I'm doing wrong? Thanks so much for your help!
-
I'd say the hosting company have changed the Ip address of the external website
I get:
173.205.126.186
-
Thanks, but that's exactly what I had. We payed for a static IP address from inmotion hosting. Any other ideas? Thanks!

when you ping the website from inside your LAN what Ip does it resolve to?
-
If I have the hostname for www set on the SME server it resolves the correct address. If it's not set than it can't resolve an address. Either way I get no ping reply.

Some websites do not respond to a ping (the hoster can control this), more importantly when it is correctly resolved, can you get to the website in a browser (sorry if this is obvious, but I think it needs asking!)
-
I can ping the site from any other internet connection. It fails to load the page in the browser saying it can't resolve the IP address.

<ping>yes I can from here as well.
I did have one such site that failed like yours a year or so ago, and I never managed to resolve the problem.
<thought> You could try disabling the http proxy in the control panel, you might want to reboot to be sure that the change bites (others might confirm or deny this is needed) .

For what it's worth I can access the site perfectly ATM.

yes, so can I, matrixtooling is having trouble only within his LAN.

Then matrixtooling should check to which IP number the site resolves on the LAN. Matrixtooling, what is the output of the following command on a (windows) box in your lan:
nslookup www.matrixtooling.com
-
Here's the NS Lookup Info.
C:\Users\ nslookup www.matrixtooling.com
Server: mail.matrixtooling.com
Address: 192.168.1.1
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.matrixtooling.com
Address: 173.205.126.186

That is strange, it returns the proper IP address.
Can you show us the output of the following commands:
db domains show matrixtooling.com
db accounts show www.matrixtooling.com
-
[root@mail html]# db domains show matrixtooling.com
matrixtooling.com=domain
Content=Primary
Description=Primary domain
Nameservers=localhost
Removable=no
SystemPrimaryDomain=yes
The other command yields nothing. Thanks for all of the support guys.

Then I am wondering where the IP address is coming from, can you remember if you configured it somewhere on your server? What does a traceroute command from the workstations on your network yield:
tracert www.matrixtools.com
tracert 173.205.126.186
And on your server, what does this yield:
nslookup www.matrixtooling.com
traceroute www.matrixtooling.com

I'm sorry I thought I mentioned that I added a "hostname" for www.matrixtooling.com hard coded to the website's static ip address. When I remove the hostname from the server config a ping can't resolve the address of www.matrixtooling.com

This is the issue, the hostname www.matrixtooling.com is resolving to a faulty IP address from your internal domain. The trace seems to go the same route until 65.91.34.106, not sure why it start to take a different faulty track when performed from a workstation compared to performing it from your server.
It also seems that the destination IP, where the traceroute from your workstation ends seems not to resolve back to a hostname as a reverse lookup does not yield a hostname. Does that IP address somehow ring a bell to you?
-
None of those IP addresses ring a bell. I tried disabling the http proxy and it completely killed all of my clients access to the internet.

That's strange, it should not do so. Proxy should not have to do with DNS lookups AFAICT.
-
That is strange, it returns the proper IP address.
Can you show us the output of the following commands:
db domains show matrixtooling.com
db accounts show www.matrixtooling.com
Shouldn't that be:
db hosts show www.matrixtooling.com

Shouldn't that be:
db hosts show www.matrixtooling.com
This also yields no results.
Also, one of your tracerts said matrixtools.com not matrixtooling.com I assume this was a typo? I reran the local workstation tracert and got this:
C:\Users\davez>tracert www.matrixtooling.com

I think something is wrong with resolution of the site by IP.
If I open a browser (Safari) at
http://173.205.126.186
I get server not found.
