email settings in virtual domains

Hi,

I've just installed the SME Server 6.0b2 and want the following configuration:

I'm hosting several domains on my server with several users, who all uses the e-mail. But my problem is that on some of the domains I have users with the same names - e.g. john@domain1.com and john@domain2.com. But john@domain1.com receives all mail for john@domain2.com and vice versa.

How can I setup my server so that john@domain1.com only gets mail sent to him and john@domain2.com only gets mail sent to his e-mail address?

I have searched this forum, but can't seem to find a working solution. Plz. help as this is the only thing stopping me from switching complete to e-smith.

thnx in advance

nimmer

That b2 suffix is important v6 is currently in public beta test., it not for production use. The latest "supported" version is v5.6 with update 4. These forums are for the discussion of "supported" vesrions only. I forget the address's that e-mail should be addressed to for v6 queries but *they are in the documentaion*.

If you can't configure it on your own then I suggest you use a version that is not in beta test and far more likely to get a response to support queries in these forums. (Fora?)

However you won't have found a solution to your problem for the supported versions beacuse there isn't one.  The reasonas are in more than one of the relevant threads.

Cheers
Dave.

Check out dungog.net for their Virtual Domain extn & the email filtering - these two items in combination will allow you to do what you want; they are not free but are a real bargain (I subscribe to their whole package which is an even greater bargain).

You should be able to install a custom template to override the settings in the virtualhosts file. Mind you, you will not be able to create two different users in the different domains on the SME server. You may simply want to change one of the users.

I must admit that it's hard to understand, why it's not implemented in e-smith. It's not that unusual to host several domains where one or more users have the same names in the different domains.

There must be an solution - anyone?

PS. I'm taking a look at dungog.net right now!

Very true, it's not unusual to do that. I do that too.

I just don't think it's what the SME server was designed for.

From http://www.e-smith.org/philosophy/ -

"By focusing on only one application - the communications server - we have been able to greatly simplify the user interface."

and

"we plan to stand out from the crowd by keeping features to a minimum"

I believe this software is meant for small to medium enterprises - hosting multiple sites sure, but multiple sites for one enterprise, not multiple sites for multiple enterprises.

When it comes to email, it's first and foremost about one user account for each member of the enterprise. Everything else is gravy.

PS. this doesn't mean I don't want to see a solution too :)
