error occuring in installation of 3.1
« on: December 05, 1999, 11:47:51 PM »
Hello,

I just downloaded e-smith 3.1 and tried to install. Everything goes fine until I
type "proceed". After detecting my cdrom it shows the blue welcome-screen
and then hangs. I cannot figure out, what the problem is, so I wrote down the
konsole messages to give you some hints about my system and what happened. (I never had any problems installing Redhat, Debian or Suse on my System...)

Maybe ther is an easy answer to my problem?

Thanks in advance

[BTW: is there any way to write the output at boot-time to some file? It is quite stupid to write it down by hand...]

Hello,

Sounds like a strange problem! Are you certain your CDROM is correct and that you downloaded the image in binary mode? The iso file should be 132,001,792 bytes after uncompressing.

The error seems to indicate that part of the installation program on the CDROM is not a valid executable, which suggests data corruption.

Have you tried installing on more than one type of computer?

Best regards,

Hello,

thanks for your fast reply. I already checked both the size of the compressed
and the iso file and they are o.k.

To get closer to the problem I used some program called Winimage to take a
look at the different images. The strange thing is, that while I can open the
images of the install-disk, I get an error-message while trying to open
RedHatasestage2 as well as on some of the other images. Don't know though
if this relates to the problem in any way.

Maybe I need to download the whole thing again?

Do you have a linux system that you can look at your CDROM with?
The CDROM needs to have directories "RedHat" and "RedHat/RPMS" - with exactly those cases. Most Windows CD mastering software will not get that right. You also need to have execute bit set
for all the files in "RedHat/instimage/usr/bin". If you burnt the CD directly from the downloaded ISO image, this should all be OK. If you used Windows software and rebuilt the ISO image,
there is a good chance that something has been broken in the process.

Hello,

I will give it another try this weekend and tell you, if it worked.

I really appreciate your effort. Thanks
