Modem connection difficulties
« on: September 25, 2002, 07:56:36 PM »
Hi:
I've been using e-smith for a long time at home with no difficulties, but I've never used it with a dial up connection before & I'm having some problems. I've got an external USR 56k on ttys0, and it wouldn't respond with the standard (blank) initialization string. I've played with it & it will dial out if I put a Z as the initialization string (the system seems to add the AT to whatever you put there) and I can hear the handshaking going on with the other modem, but each time it fails. I have tried it with two different ISPs. The messages log shows either:

chat[1566]:  -- failed
chat[1566]: Failed (NO CARRIER)

or:

chat[1582]: CONNECT
chat[1582]:  -- got it
diald[855]: connector: chat:  Sep 25 05:55:52 CONNECT 50666/ARQ/V90/LAPM/V42BIS
diald[855]: Connected to site 0.0.0.0
diald[855]: Running pppd (pid = 1583).
diald[1583]: Running pppd: /usr/sbin/pppd -defaultroute -detach modem crtscts mtu 1500 mru 1500 name -user- noauth noipdefault ipparam diald
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-108
pppd[1583]: pppd 2.4.0 started by root, uid 0
pppd[1583]: Using interface ppp0
pppd[1583]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
pppd[1583]: PAP authentication failed
gateway2 pppd[1583]: Connection terminated.
gateway2 pppd[1583]: Exit.
diald[855]: stop ppp0: RTNETLINK answers: No such process
kernel: ppp: ppp0 not active
diald[855]: stop ppp0: SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device or address
diald[855]: Disconnected. Call duration 1 seconds.
diald[855]: IP transmitted 0 bytes and received 0 bytes.
diald[855]: Delaying 10 seconds before clear to dial.

I would think that PAP authentication failed means my password is incorrect, but I've triple checked it. Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Bobby
