Topic: Curious dialup dependence?

I have been using e-smith for several month... with very few maintenance stops.
Yesterday I decided to stop the server for a while, to take off the cd-rom unit, that have not been used since installation.... so I wanted to put in another pc.
I took it off and after rebooting  the dialup connection had erratic behaviour and hangups at half way of chat script. so I put the Cd-rom unit back in the server and everything returned to normal operation.
Yes... I know!,....how much could cost a CD-Rom unit? but it is useless in the server, or at least I thought that!

Most of us would probably leave the server pc with only: motherboard,hard-disk, ram memory, modem and nic if we could!!!
but at least Cd-Rom  unit has to be there for normal operation.
just a couriosity! (that killed the cat)

This is very curious indeed. My e-smith server doesn't have a cdrom drive -I only put one in briefly for the installation (although, as a side note, it's possible to install over a network as well)- and it's working great. I would just try again and see what happens.

I've already met this kind of problem but it was with a RedHat distrib, and the problem was hardware: The Western Digital hard disk have a different config if it's a Master disk alone or a Master with Secondary !

I've installed e-smith last week to test it, I've just put in a ide cdrom drive for the install and removed it after: I've no problem, it works fine (for the Internet gateway, but not yet for the VPN I tried to establish)

Check your hard disk setup !
