fetchmail DNS-problems
« on: September 05, 2001, 03:09:38 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have the following problem when I let my e-smith 4.1.1 gateway collect my email from a multidrop emailadress...

I use a e-smith 4.1.1 server, that connects thru a fli4l ISDN-router (like freesco) to collect my mail at a multidrop emailadress. I see that it makes the connection to my ISP by checking the syslog of my router, but with every attempt I get the following message:

>From:      Cron Daemon [root@fatspike.int]
>Send:      September 4th 2001 13:00
> To:         root@fatspike.int
> Subject:  Cron /etc/stratmail

>fetchmail: couldn't find canonical DNS name of mail.fatspike.nl

fatspike.int is my internal domain and fatspike.nl is my internetdomain, that I use to receive mail... I think I've got to set a DNS record somwhere, but I haven't got any idea where I should do this.

I know that it would be easier to only use the e-smith server, but I haven't got cable yet and sadly enough e-smith doesn't support ISDN...

Can anyone help me with this one, I've been trying for about two months now and can't get it working...

Hi,

In the e-smith config, where you've put your ISP mail's server, try putting it's IP address in instead of the name.

Hi Robert,

Hi

On your e-smith server, login as root and type in the following

ping -c 4 isp.mailserver.com

If you have problems tell me the name of the mail server, and i'll get the IP address for you.

Kind regards,
Rob.

Hi again,

If you mail servers name is; mail.fatspike.nl then the IP address is;

212.72.51.215

Although when i try to ping it, I don't get any reply 100% packet loss, which could mean your ISP's mail server is down :-(

Hi Robert,

I tried filling in the ip-number and the error-message was gone!!!

On the other hand, I'm still not able to recieve email form my multidrop-account.
I've tried sending email from my e-smith box to antoher account but that doesn't seem to work either.

What ports need to be open to recieve email, maybe I got them closed...

Errm,

I not sure what ports need to be open to receive mail, but the port for POP3 is 110, and the port for SMTP is 25.

Hope this helps,

Rob.

Hai,

Pieter, I have the same config as you (e-smith + fli4l, multiple mail domains) and have it working with Internal ISDN adapter (NetCardII from ptt).

If you would like to get your config working with ISDN among other things, you can contact me at my above e-mail adress in Dutch.

Robert: this is just a fast way to help Pieter with his ISDN issue.

Regards,

H.F. Wang: That would be great, it's not so easy for me to understand everything in english. Sadly I can't find your emailadress anywhere, so i can't email you...

Robert: Thanx for all your help. As you'll understand it's easier for me to talk to H.F. Wang, because he has the same setup as me. Maybe I can help you with something in the future...
