Windoz box outside the e-smith network

Windoz box outside the e-smith network

I'm headed toward a sattelite bi-directional internet connection. It comes with an USB connected modem. As e-smith dosen't support USB ports and I'm sure the modem software isn't Linux compatable, I'm going to have to run a Windoz box on the outside of the e-smith network to connect.
Now to my question.
I assume (carefully) that I'm going to have to install some windoz based firewall to keep the script kiddies from stealing my broadband connection, but how much do I have to worry about the things on the inside of the e-smith network? Because the Linux box will be just a server and a gateway, will it still have the firewall capabilities it has now as a dial-up connection with the modem hooked to the e-smith box?

This sattelite stuff is still new to me. I get the concept of DSL and cable connections with the modem or connection directly to the linux box. I just don't know how the addition of the external win box will comprimise security.

Thanks

Henry

Henry, it might be a better idea for you to try modifying the latest 4.1 beta to support your modem, than it would be to waste a box running Windows. Version 4.1 will include some USB support, as it is based on RedHat 7. We aren't currently using USB for anything, but would be interested to hear how you get on.

Followup discussion on the developers mailing list or the Experienced User Forum please.
