I am trying to patch someone excuse for a server that caused their ISP to shut them down.  They use Exchange running on a WinNT4.5 SBS.  Someone was was bouncing SPAM off the SMTP sever.  I want to put up 5.1.2 to act as the firewall/gateway.  I still need to use the Echange to handle email. so I want to the delegate the NT4.5 SBS server.  The question I have is:  will this configuration allow people to hit the SMTP server on NT4.5 SBS, or will 5.1.2 block relaying?

If you use SME 5.1.2 as your SMTP server, it will block relaying.  If you just port forward port 25 to your exchange server, SME won't help it.

All you need is to set 'server-manager > E-mail retreival > Delegate mail server' to your Exchange server IP address.

The SME server in server-gateway mode is the incoming and outgoing smtp server and simply forwards incoming to Exchange for final delivery.  Set the Exchange outbound smtp server to the SME server IP address.

In default mode the SME server permits all internal and local defined networks to use smtp.  As long as your Exchange server is on one of your defined internal/local networks, everything will work just fine.

Thanks to everyone that resonded...  heck... and everyone else too!
the solutions that were offered worked fine.  the sad news (for Micr$osft) is that the NT4.5 SBS was the culprit...  the SPAMing took off again once I hooked the exchange server to the network.  The only solution that I had to offer was to format the hard drive and install an OS that would be more stable, secure, and unpredictable...  You guessed it...  SME wins another PDC.  Nice work guys.
