Hardware upgrade planned...obstacles???
« on: June 19, 2002, 08:11:11 PM »
I plan to upgrade my SME server's motherboard, RAM, and CPU to something a bit more current. It's currently running an Intel board with a P-133 and 80 Mb of EDO RAM (Yes, I know thats old stuff, but it has worked just fine for quite some time). The new hardware is going to be an Abit KG7RAID motherboard with an AMD Athlon 900 CPU and 256 DDR RAM.  My question is what should I expect from SME when I do this? Will it recognize the new hardware and work properly, or should I do a backup to desktop first, install fresh after the upgrade and then restore from desktop? Any and all advice is appreciated!

It should work just fine to swap in the new mobo.  However, it won't use the best kernel for your processor--you're going to be using the i586 kernel with your existing CPU, and the i686 one is best for the athlon.  It'll still work fine, though.

If you do an upgrade once you've installed the new hardware, that should resolve this issue.

You should back it all up first.
Install the new hardware.
Fresh install of OS.
Restore data/config from backup.
The i586 kernel, I am sure, will not take advantage of the advanced functions of the new processor. This will likely have a large effect on performance.
