Topic: PPP "not permitted" error under 4.1.1

I'm trying to install e-smith 4.1.1 on to a server. Install goes fine, but I am unable to connect to any ISP. /var/log/messages shows the following:

Mar 14 16:56:21 e-smith pppd[3930]: ioctl(TIOCSETD(PPP)): Operation not permitted(1)
Mar 14 16:56:21 e-smith pppd[3930]: This system lacks kernel support for PPP.  This could be because the PPP kernel module could not be loaded, or because PPP was not included in the kernel configuration.  If PPP was included as a module, try /sbin/modprobe -v ppp'.  If that fails, check t

checking through the forum I found a similar error on an SMP system running 4.1, however the ppp patches mentioned there are already applied under 4.1.1

Has anyone else experienced this, or can I get any pointers to debug the problem?

System is as follows:

Dell 2400 single PIII 500 precessor
256MB RAM
PERC-2 controller (RAID-5 over 4 9.1GB drives)
external Hayes Accura 15700 TA

TA works fine under win95.

I'm a relative "newbie" to Linux and e-smith but have a reasonable Solaris knowledge. I'm learning fast and like what I see so far, especially e-smith!

We've now verified that this problem occurs on a fresh install of 4.1.1, on an SMP system. The log messages about "system lacks kernel support for PPP" is bogus. The real problem is the failing ioctl (TIOCSETD(PPP)). We are investigating.

Single processor system, eh? That's another interesting data point.

Keep a watch on the bugs page on www.e-smith.org - we'll let you know when we fix the problem.

Thanks for the response. It is a fresh install of 4.1.1, looks like I'll be downloading the 4.1 image for the moment! Hope you get to the bottom of things. I'm willing to provide you with any further info you require (it's in my own interest after all )

I have a older smp machine(dual 200's on a tyan motherboard)
that won't connect in dialup mode. Worked great on 4.0 and 4.01
but hasn't worked on 4.1(tried 4.1b3, 4.1rc1, 4.1rc3, 4.1, 4.1.1)
Had to go back to 4.01 to make it work right. I dont know if ]
going back to 4.1 will solve the problem for you

I've "cured" the problem by installing on to an old Pentium 233MMX with 32M RAM! Obviously performance is **REAL SLOW** compared to the Dell box, but at least it lets me "play" with it to find out what I can and can't do.

Hope that a fix for these problems comes out soon, then I can recommend e-smith and take out a support contract (or three as we could use three e-mail servers).

In case it's of any interest to anyone I've also noticed that appletalk won't work properly on the Dell box either (will not pick up zone information), but works fine on the no-name MMX!

From other reports, it would have worked fine on the Dell if you chose the uniprocessor kernel at bootup, rather than the default smp kernel.

I think I've found and fixed the problem. Check the bugs page later today for an update, after I do some more testing.

Please report all bugs to bugs@e-smith.com. FYI, there have been no previous reports of appletalk problems.

 As a matter of interest I didn't get a choice of single or SMP kernel when I installed, which I wouldn't have expected as this is a single processor system. Is there anything I can check (logs, config files etc) to see if either RH7 or e-smith thinks this is an SMP system?

I'll do a clean re-install, apply the necessary patches and then restore my system prefs, accounts etc and re-check appletalk. If I've still got problems I'll report it.

Just to finish this off.....

I've applied ppp-2.4.0-9.i386.rpm and appletalk-fixed-0.1-7.i386.rpm from the e-smith 4.1.1 updates area.  Both of the problems I have noted have been fixed by this. Server now working 100% (as far as I can tell with my limited experience!) and I am now an extremely happy bunny

Thanks to Charlie for his quick response on this and to all of the e-smith team I've been dealing with over the last few days. A great team and a brilliant product!

Just to satisfy my curiosity can someone give me a brief idea of what was happening?

I am having the same issue on my dual-pro200 system.  I can't seem to find ppp-2.4.0-9.i386.rpm anywhere.  Does anyone have a suggrestion on where I can find this?

All official e-smith patches appear on this (and other mirror) servers. Pick "downloads" from the main e-smith.org website and this will give you a list of all mirror sites.
