Full tape restore
« on: September 30, 2002, 05:25:30 AM »
Hi again all,

While on the subject of tape drives, I searched but can't seem to find it, so here goes.

As I understand it, a standard backup to tape on SME will backup Everything on the SME server (including non standard stuff, things in the root directory of SME, well ok Everything :)). A standard restore from tape will only restore the "standard" stuff (like a restore from desktop) and not the rest of the customisations, etc.

So the questions are :-
1. Can a full restore from tape be performed so that everything gets put back exactly as it was when the backup was performed (obviously if it can be done, commands will need to be issued manually) and so avoiding the need to redo all customisations ? If so then....
2. What command(s) need to be issued for SME to restore everything from the tape ?

The obvious thing to ask of course is why isn't this a standard option (either in server manager or the admin console) ? Seems pretty silly to be able to back it all up via a manager option but not have a simple means to restore it again. If there's already a contrib to do this, I must apologise as I must have missed it. If there is one, point me in the right direction ?

Thanks.

I just did a full restore from tape for upgrade reasons.

It did not restore additional rpms like mailfilter, leafnode and all the other stuff i put on my e-smith in 2 years.

It did not restore any customizations (spell?), that i did put into /etc for lazilyness.

It did not restore the newer samba rpms and update rpms.

But that was just about 2 hours of work. Nothing compared with the full install and restore of a Windows or Novell Server.

Hi Alexander,

That is exactly as written in the manual. However, as I understand it, the "extra" bits are all there on the tape. There should be a way to do a full restore. If someone knows the commands necessary to do this, could you share it ?

I havent tried it, but surely the simplest way would be to do a selective restore nominating the files to be restored with the root directory forward slash. That should restore everything on the tape.

G'Day Ed,

I'm pretty sure that if you did a selective restore from root on, your SQL databases don't get put back right.
