3ware monitoring utility
« on: November 19, 2002, 12:51:56 PM »
Hi,

Does someone know what steps to take to install the 3ware monitoring utility.
It seems to install ok. But the service does not start. I tried to start the service manualy to no avail (seems that the file is not copied by the install script in the right directory ?? )

I tried this in e-smith ver 5.1.2 and 5.6 Beta 7 with the same results.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Andres

First of all, you'll need the latest driver from 3ware to match your kernel version.  There's no match for any of the SME 5.x series, but the RedHat 7.3 version *MIGHT* work with 5.6, beta 7. I've been meaning to test this, but haven't.  (download rh7x.tgz)  They do provide source code if you know how to compile it for your kernel, but my experiences with this have been less than marvelous.

After the driver is installed and working, you then are allowed to upgrade the firmware on the card.

After that is all working, the monitoring utility can be installed, but you will have to manually install it, as the 3ware script assumes Runlevel 6, whereas SME operates at runlevel 7.  Back in one of the earlier howto's, someone posted a modified script for doing this. I don't believe it will work, but studying it will show you what you need to do from the keyboard to install the monitor -- not as bad as that sounds -- most of the 3ware script isn't needed.

Sorry to interrupt your thread, but I saw the subject by accident, and was amazed.
Does your question actually mean that SME 5.5 supports the RAID-controllers from 3ware ? Out of the box ?
I have a 7500-4 in mind for a much needed server hardware upgrade, but counting my dimes I don't really want to invest in something that is not recognized by the installer. I have already tried my hand (in vain, of course) with a Promise Fast Trak 2000 (for a RAID 1), so I think you can appreciate my predicament.
I'm a newbie, and don't have the time to fidget around with stuff I don't know enough about, so I should be  really happy if you can confirm to me that the SME 5.5 installation CD can find a configured RAID 5 drive on a 3ware controller and just happily continue with the installation.

Yes, the "generic" 3ware driver included with SME will recognize and work with a 3ware card. What it won't do is allow you to run remote monitoring of the raid array -- see my earlier msg. I haven't tested every possible iteration, but those I have tried just work, without intervention. Also, note that I have only tried 6000 and 7000 series cards.  Here's a good, inexpensive source for you for 3ware cards:

Thank you very much, Tom - you've just made my day.
Also thank you for the reference to an inexpensive vendor. I can't use him, though - the cost in transportation (and customs) for Denmark eats up the pricedifference (in Denmark the pricing for a 7500-4 is the equivalent of $367).
Again thank you for a clear answer.
And again to you Andres, sorry for breaking into your thread.

Greetings from a happy man
