That's correct. Disabling it will use the standard route through your ISP. The PPTP connection will only be used for addresses on the LAN. FYI, if yourdomain.com is a live domain on the internet, it will go through your ISP. You'll need to use 192.168.0.1 or whatever the SME's private IP is to force traffic to be routed through the PPTP connection.
If you're just trying to get external access to send mail, it's probably a whole lot easier to just install Damian's SASL package, which allows SMTP user authentication. Just change one thing in OE's account properties and it'll always work. It also enables SSL connections, so all the traffic between the client and server (including your password) is encrypted, instead of plaintext.
