Topic: Mylex DAC960 Problems - Installing SME 5.1.2

Hi,

I've dug out an old HP Prioris system that has a lot of SCSI drives in it. I decided that I could probably use it as a storage area for our network and that SME 5.1.2 would be ideal on it.

However the BIOS does not support direct booting from a SCSI CD drive (Toshiba) so I created a boot disk. It recognises the array and loads the DAC960 driver, but refuses to see the CD Rom! The installer asks if CD is local or from HD I reply local and then get asked which driver to use. However the module for the DAC960 has already loaded, and will not re-insert.

Does anyone know of a way to let the installer know that the CD is on the same controller as the array (ID 5) so that I can complete the install?

The HP NetServers that I have used with SME all have the CD-Rom installed on a separate internal SCSI adapter..usually an Adaptec.  You might make sure that the CD-Rom is attached to the correct channel and that it is terminated properly.  Also make sure that it is enabled in the BIOS config.  If all else fails, you could always stick in an IDE CD-Rom drive and use it...assuming there is an IDE channel in the server that is enabled in the bios.....

fyi - I have an HP NetRaid-1 card in an old NetServer that worked fine with SME 5.5 but failed miserably when upgrading to SME 5.6
I also have an HP NetRaid-1si that works with SME5.0 but not SME5.1.2 or SME5.5.

It appears that there is only one SCSI adaptor in this machine. I know that it works as it is currently configured under SCO and can access the CD no problem. I thought about IDE myself, but it appears that although the BIOS supports it there's no actual connector

I think the problem may be the Linux driver for the Mylex unit. From a quick read at the docs it appears that it only expects to find RAID units attached, not a CD ROM!

I've tried all versions of SME from 4.0 upwards (don't think I ever throw out a cd ). None of them can access the CD.

Looks like this machine could be heading for the skip

Just install an old SCSI adapter in the machine.  Everyone has an old SCSI adapter sitting in a drawer somewhere...right....
