Reserving IP within DHCP pool [SME 5.6]
« on: February 17, 2003, 08:47:46 PM »
Please READ and UNDERSTAND scenario before replaying !!!

I must connect my Notebook at at least two locations. On both locations are SME servers acting as DHCP servers, but they are using different IP-class and POOL for DHCP !!! For security reasons my PC must have special IP assigned becouse this IPs are only allowed to admin SME and other servers. So here is what I want :

1. At firts location I want IP1 assigned to my Note (based on MAC address)

2. At second location I want IP2 assigned to my Note (based on same MAC address, but different IP)

Assigning static IPs on every move is out of the question !? If Windoze NT server included DHCP server can do this, dhcpd can do this 100%. Question is HOW ???

In both locations in the "hostname and addresses" put a record for your notebook with MAC address for it. It will assign predefined IP everytime.

As was stated by several people in the original thread (http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=6812.msg24468#msg24468), you can use the Hostnames and Addresses panel to specify a reserved IP to a certain MAC. However, that IP can't be inside the range specified for DHCP. In other words, you can't have the SME giving out x.x.x.100 through x.x.x.200 for DHCP, and give your PC x.x.x.150. You could give your PC x.x.x.99 or x.x.x.201 though. Previous versions allowed you to do this, but it could also assign that IP address to another PC via the regular DHCP range, which would obviously cause problems. So 5.6 just doesn't allow you to do it.

If this doesn't work for you, please explain in more detail. I (and apparently others) have not seen any reason why this won't work for you.

So why you just don´t say " Thanks Bill Talcot. It´s working!  "

It´s his (Bill) solution that worked to you! Isn´t?
