AOL rejecting messages
« on: February 27, 2003, 10:18:12 AM »
I run a couple of virtual domains on my server. One of these is used by my wife, and she has had the last 3 emails she sent to a contact on AOL rejected :

Connected to 64.12.136.217 but greeting failed.
Remote host said: 550-The IP address you're using to connect to AOL is either open to the
550-free relaying of e-mail, is serving as an open proxy, or is listed in
550-the Dial-Up List operated by MAPS (www.mail-abuse.org). AOL cannot
550-accept further e-mail transactions from your server until either your
550-server is closed to free relaying/proxy, or your IP address is removed
550-from MAPS Dial-Up List. For additional information, please visit
550 http://postmaster.info.aol.com
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.

I've put in my IP on MAPS, and it shows clean. In any case, I know I'm not relaying, so I wonder if AOL is rejecting  because the mail header has the real domain name, and the messages are from the virtual domain? I've seen no problems with other recipients. Has anyone had this problem, with AOL or other ISP?

Thanks,

Des,

I wouldn't take it personally. Your ISP has listed its dial-up and dynamic IP net blocks with MAPS Dial up list (DUL). AOL is using this and will only accept SMTP traffic from your ISPs servers. Unfortunately that is the way the  DUL works. It is nothing to do with your server setup.

I get the same thing Des, but only from my Virtual Domains.  If I send a mail from the Primary domain it goes right through.  My IP isn't listed in MAPS either.

I can't really offer any specific help, but might it have to do with reverse lookups?

It's a pity that they didn't tell you which of these conditions was the problem. The solution is for you to use your ISP's SMTP server for relaying, using the SMTPSmartHost setting.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

Charlie, where do I find the SMTPSmartHost setting?

Thanks,

The problem with that, for me, is then the SMTP server at the ISP limits attachment sizes, which is one of the benefits of running my own mail server.  I only have one person which forwards his email to his home mail account which is AOL.  Told him to switch ISP's or use webmail.  (Never did like AOL anyway...hehehe)

OK, found it - I didn't connect the directive name with the server manager mail options.

Thanks again, Charlie.

I recently started seeing the same problem when sending mail to AOL or Road Runner addresses.

It appears that my ISP, Comcast, has listed its dynamically assigned IP's on the MAPS Dial-up User List (http://mail-abuse.org/dul).  Subnet 68.86.0.0/16 is listed which includes me.  I’m guessing that AOL, Road Runner and others are using the list to filter incoming mail.  This approach assumes that most legitimate mail comes from servers at fixed addresses and mail from dynamically assigned addresses is likely to be spam.

I fixed the problem by doing exactly as Charlie said.  I logged into the server-manager, selected "Other e-mail settings" and set the "Internet provider's SMTP server" to smtp.comcast.net.  My home network uses SME server 5.1.2.

Well, I sent them a nasty email stating that I am not an open relay and all mail from my IP is legite.  I also challenged them to prove me wrong.  My IP is no longer on the list and I can send to aol.com no problemo from my virtual domains.
