Q: set up ADSL connection with TPG using a static IP address
« on: March 06, 2003, 02:42:31 AM »
I experienced a configuration problem with an e-smith box (V5.5)in an attempt to connect ADSL with static IP address using 'alcatel speedtouch home' modem which acts as a bridge.

I don't have any problem with my previous ISP using 'pppoe' (dynamic IP). I decided to switch to the new ISP as it offers static IP. However, when switching to this new ISP, I was requested to reconfigure the ADSL modem to run in a bridge mode, I did so.  As a result, I can connect a MS-XP box in, but not e-smith box....

a) There is no problem in configuring an ADSL MODEM for its BRIDGE mode, as I can successfully connect a Microsoft XP box with the same modem with the same setting into internet.

b) There shall be no faults in NICs as I used them prior to the ISP switch over.

c) In configuring the e-smith for internet connection, I chose 'Static IP address' instead of 'PPPOE', and I entered and checked the 'IP address, network mask, gateway IP address' setting and they are all correct.

d) After saving and activating the new configuration, reboot the machine,  'ifconfig -a', shows 'eth1' is down (eth1 connects to the ADSL Modem). No doubt, 'ping' shows that the network in any internet site is unreachalbe.

My questions:
a) Am I heading to wrong direction?
--  Any side effect remaining due to previous 'pppoe' configuration?

b) Why eth1 is not up? shall I try 'ifconfig eth1 x.x.x.x netmask y.y.y.y up' and add 'route -net default gw z.z.z.z eth1' manually?

c) From SME's admin interface, if static IP address mode is chosen, why won't we asked to enter primary and second DNS address? Do I need manually add them into /etc/resolv.conf.

I wonder if you can offer advice upon these issues. Many thanks.
regards,
Guo

I have a static ip also, not with tpg but my isp can work in bridged mode. I found that setting my server to static ip did not work. I don't run my modem in bridge mode and I still use pppoe and it connects and works perfectly, and has no problem getting the same ip every time with no input on my part. It might be worth your while to experiment a little

Guo,
I have an identical setup to you, with many versions up to 5.6 and no problems at all (TPG, bridged, speedtouch modem). Contact me offlist if you need a hand.

I bet guo you are using the billion brand modem/router?????

I tried that brand and no matter want I did I just could not get that modem working with my esmith. Swapped it over for a speedtouch and away it went.

I tried Rick's idea as well, but alas no go :-(

We have connected a few clients to Dlinks DSL300 modem and TPG in bridge mode with no problems. Just wet the 2nd NIC to the IP allocated and the GW to one less. It just works after that.
Hope it helps

hi, all

I have been away for past a few days and didn't acknowlodge your emails. And many thanks indeed.

The was connec established and the reason for the first attempt failure is still unclear.

It is NICs conflict problem for sure (one SMC1211 EZCard, another is Intel expro100). The IO and IRQ are no conflict and both work fine individually but they simply don't like working together on one host :(

I solve this by changing one of them by an old 3C509 card and all fine.

The the box is work fine now execpt there is no way to turn Hard disk DMA on. I used a dated HP Pavilion (7310) box with SIS5513 chip on. It appears that the linux kernal does not support the chips et.  However, I think it is better allocate another old PC to replace this.

Thank you all indeed.
