Good Morning,

Was curious about the benefits of going to Twiggi versus using the standard POP access to my email server. Is it more like Exchange or Lotus Notes?

Thanks,

Wally

I suggest looking for reviews beyond the e-smith website. Twiggi runs on lots of distributions about identically so there's no need to limit yourself to here.

Twiggi's home page is http://twiggi.sourceforge.net. That has screen-shots, tutorials, etc.

For comparison a list of many groupware packages is at http://www.svpal.org/~grantbow/groupware.html

Regarding "like Exchange or Lotus Notes" you'll need to be more specific. That's way too big a question to be answered casually, requires too many assumptions about familiarity with the applications, intended uses, skill levels, customizations, etc.

FWIW I'd describe Twiggi as a particularly good web-mail system with some nice groupware tools that could be useful if everyone in an organization took advantage of them.

It's not nearly as mature as Exchange or Notes, has no desktop clients of it's own, no commercial vertical integration. Twiggi doesn't offer a fraction of the features Exchange or Notes do but then it's costs are a lot less and few organizations make full use of Exchange or Notes features anyway.

Twiggi is very suitable to a small or medium-sized organization, particularly ones that don't want to invest in the professional staff, high-end hardware, and expensive licenses that Exchange & Notes require. It takes little training to set up, maintain, or use. Indeed one can almost forego end-user training on Twiggi beyond explaining the local conventions (internal mailing lists, policies, etc.)

Twiggi can be used very effectively as an introduction to groupware for an organization unused to that type of automation, unwilling to invest in Exchange/Notes/Groupwise. Finally it does integrate exceptionally well with e-smith/SME, compliments the intended userbase perfectly.

I have in the past week or so setup Twiggi with the great help this forum provides and it really isn't hard at all if you keep your eyes open. Maitenance is very easy. It seems like a great chioce for SOHO situations and will only get better.

BTW, does anyone know the latest version for SME 5.6?? I am presently using 1.0.13.. As well what other groupware out there is available and integrates well with SME 5.6??

Other "groupware" might include Horde, part of which ships with 5.6 (and, for that matter, all versions since 4.something).  Some of their additional apps (calendar, notes, tasks) have been released and are available for SME in my contribs directory.
