Topic: SME6.0b2: intermittant internet access

I'm not sure if it is 6.0b2 or our ISP, but the internet access since installing (fresh) 6.0b2 has become a pain, sometimes it works others it doesn't.

If it doesn't connect to sites/pop servers, I wait for a few minutes and it works again!

I'm using the Alcatel SpeedTouch Pro on a 512k ADSL.

has anyone else had a similar experience?

I think I might have found the problem, but I don't know what the solution is so please help!

here's a snippet out of the /var/log/messages:

The above messages are repeated countless times in the log file, I have no idea what they mean and what they're trying to tell me, except that I know that the 10.0.0.138 addresss is the Alcatel SpeedTouch Pro ADSL modem's IP address

ETH1 is the external ethernet card connected to the Alcatel, its address is 10.0.0.1 with mask 255.0.0.0

please help, the internet connection is really slowing down and every few minutes it just gives up and we cannot connect to the internet.

Are you sure Mahmood that 255.0.0.0 is right?  or should it be 255.255.255.0 (try to change it for eth1)

For a 10. IP address, a /8 netmask is appropriate.

hi all!

  i thought im the only one having this problem but i guess not. im using an SME5.6 server with update2 with an ADSL connection. then SME6.0b2 was released so i tried it out (fresh install). but i discovered later that the internet connection became so shittie. sometimes its it connected to the internet but we in the LAN cant connect to the net. sometimes it is connected to the net and sharing it to the LAN but it is so very slow (which unusually happen to me) and sometimes im experiencing those problems Mahmood experienced.

so i went back to SME5.6. i updated it to update2 again. everything is fine then. then i downloaded update4, then i noticed that im experiencing what im experiencing in the SME6.0beta2.

whats with SME5.6 update4 and SME6.0beta2? why is this happening?

now im reinstalled SME5.6 and only updated it to update2. im waiting for futher info from you guys why is this happening before updating to update4.

As has been posted here innumerable times, if you encounter issues with the 6.0 beta, contact smebugs@mitel.com ONLY with a description of what's going on.

Will do Dan, but I hope that doesn't mean that the developers do not bother to read this list and respond to various queries here as well. I know that they do.

What is really required rather than just emailing to yet another email address, Mitel should set up a proper bugzilla so that people like me can first look at the logged bugs, their resolution if any and then if a similar bug is not registered just go ahead and register it. That I think will save everyone a lot of time.

To be honest why I posted this here in the first place is because is was not sure if what I experience is in fact a bug!

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Besides, I take offence with your expression "do not bother". It is not my job to read this forum. If I do so, I do so in my own time, and by my own choice.

If you wish to set up and maintain a public bugzilla site, then you are welcome to do so.

We ask that any suspected bugs (i.e. any malfunction) be reported to smebugs@mitel.com. I don't think this is a lot to ask.

I don't want to flame you or anyone. it is just not my style. I have been courteous in my questions and the least I expect from you is to return the same.

Like you I've been on forums and mailing lists for a very long time, and this kind of reply does not help solve any problem. You are bigger than that.

If I don't have anything to contribute I don't in the hope that others more knowledgeable that I am will.

The suggestion to create a bugzilla site is valid and does not warrant you even suggesting that I do this on my own. I can. But it would be much more worthwhile for the company behind this project to do so. And what's the big deal? Are you afraid of showing that your product does have bugs? What product doesn't? But forewarned is forearmed.

Please let's not take this issue and create a flame war out of it.

Back to the question at hand, 3 people so far are suffering from intermittent internet access. Has anyone found a solution?

l've installed another 6.0b2 with single drive configuration and it's working fine! Is this something to do with software mirrored setups I wonder?

Just installed a hardware raid 1 controller card and the internet access is MUCH better, however I still get the following in the log from time to time and when I do, no domains can be resolved:

I'm no expect with TCP/IP ,  the leading ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff is a broadcast address, destination and source ports 67 and 68 deal with DHCP. Who's the Vendor of the MAC Address 00:90:d0:xx:xx:xx. (first 3 bytes are vendor specific)  A quick search with google, Speed Touch maybe the vendor. ?? . Maybe your ISP is have intermittent problems assigning you an IP address.

I did some digging about your ADSL Speed Touch router. You need to outline your Network wiring layout and how U setup up the SME server. Copy and paste the "Review Config" from the Server-Manager. Remember a client PC get a DHCP config from the first DHCP Server that answers. Also PUTTY into your SME, and execute 'lynx http://www.msn.com'. Do you get a text-based page of the MSN home-page. Can you ping an Internet host from the SME command prompt ? Be certain you ping a host that responds to ICMP packets (many don't, incl. msn.com).

Also, In an earlier Post the vendor MAC address of 00:c0:df:xx:xx:xx belongs to KYE Systems (kye.com) which is a provider or DSL routers, wireless,etc.

With all the posts about your problem, I don't believe it's a SME problem. The other fellow who is having trouble with Internet trouble is also using ADSL..

Suggestion: Install ethereal on the client PC's (www.ethereal.org) and study up on the 7 layers of the OSI layers P=physical D=datalink N=Network T=Transport S=Session P=presentation A=Application. Networks and Ethernet speak with MAC addresses (TCP uses ARP requests to to find what MAC owns which IP address and so on.) Happy studying !

Thank you Bill, you got me thinking a bit more about this problem, and what I ended up doing is going into the Alcatel router and switch off its built in DNS and DHCP. Now at least the denylog messages are more meaningful, for instance:

Where you see that now I know where the source actually is coming from, what port it originate and what the destination is. This one is from one of the mailing lists I subscribe to. And as it is denied, I guess that's because the local port 119 is blocked? But why is the destination port is givin as 15059? Shouldn't that be 119 as well?

I don't know much about these things unfortunately but as you say, I have downloaded the ethereal and will start studing!
