Embedded Objects In Webmail
« on: August 07, 2003, 01:23:35 PM »
Hello,

I have a company that insists on sending .PDF files, via email (Which is fine) but instead of attaching the file, the embed the .PDF file into the email, and webmail doesn't understand it.

Adobe acrobat is installed on the client machine, does anyone have any ideas how to make the file readable??

Thanks in advance,
Rob.

Is the sender using Outlook of some version?

"embedding" of files into an email is effectively still attaching them. Is there any sign of these pdf files in the webmail - even if it's just large amounts of gobbledegook mime-like text? If there is, viewing the source to get the mime and then mimedecoding it manually may give satisfaction. As a one off. If you must remain in this position, you're going to have to :
- get a proper mail client
- request the company to:
   - stop embedding and start attaching (and start formatting their emails in plaintext too for good measure - "but I can't see my pink kitten stationery!")
   -  get a proper mail client

This always puzzles me. Isn't it better to thank afterwards?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply,

I'm not sure what client the sender is using, but i presume it's Outlook of some flavour. The .PDF file just shows up in the mail as large amounts of rubbish text.

This isn't a one off it's going to be a recurring thing.

So I guess we'll have to move to Outlook with IMAP then.

Cheers,
Rob.

Consider Mozilla's IMAP client. LookOut's IMAP support is far too Interesting.

I've had the same problem. Sender is using Outlook 2000/Exchange.
Receiving end is Outlook XP/SME5.6U4 IMAP.

It appears that the attachment/embedded document isn't seen for whatever reason by the UUCP process on the SME's SMTP server.

There is no UUCP process.

You should assume until proven otherwise that the mail message content is being presented to the mail client exactly as it was received. Either the client (webmail) doesn't know how to present the message (can it be viewed correctly via another POP or IMAP client?) or the message was garbled to being with.

If you suspect that any part of the server software is at fault, send mail to smebugs@mitel.com.

...and the fact that a message sent from Outlook isn't appearing as intended is extremely thin evidence of a problem with the SME server.  MS is well-known for ignoring standards when it suits them, and Outlook, last I saw, still wants to send attachments via inline uuencoding rather than multipart MIME messages.  IMP doesn't recognize such silliness.
