Hi

Just wondering what sort of uptimes people are getting with SME?

I cant seem to get past about 40 days without having to restart due to an update or another reason.

What sort of time have you guys got?

I have one that has been running for over 50 without a re-boot. The only reason for the reboot was due to an upgrade, otherwise it has been up for about 3 months, but I am new to this distro, and have put 5 servers into production in the last 6 months. I saw a topic thread a couple of weeks ago with systems listed with over 400 days up.

Yes. I got 213 days, 8 hours and 14 minutes.
No UPS.
Using the clothes iron with Steam on  was expressly forbidden in the house during that period.
Had a total black out a week after I had to reboot anyway.

What updates require reboots, Scott?

54 days here on 5.6 after a planned reboot for a reason I can't recall.  Probably VPN patch.

My highest so far has been about 120 days; power outage took down the system.  That was on 5.6.

Just the ones supplied by Mitel.  Always seemed to catch them at the wrong time.

11:18pm  up 196 days, 15:38 and  11:37pm  up 113 days, 10:34.  One has  Service Link, one doesn't.

I seem to recall having about 80 uptime days at one stage (SME 5.6).

However that's nothing compared to the old Sun ELC workstation at work which clocked up 1001 days uptime before we had to shut it down so the UPS could be serviced.

About three months ago, my 5.1.2 server here was somewhere around 300 days, and the only reason for a reboot was to convince a user that a problem they had wasn't with the server :-) I was gutted to have to reboot it.

I have a 5.6 one for a client which has only gone down for power or hardware problems - it's in a pretty foul environment. But it consistently runs for months at a time.

I have a 6.0b3 at home and it has only gone down for power, or when someone comes too stay - it's in a spare bedroom. I have too turn it off for visitors so they don't get disturbed by the noise. Must get it down to the garage......

Usually the only thing that takes them down is power, knackered fans making too much noise needing replacement, or swapping out dodgy drives from the raid. Perhaps I should invest in some pukka server hardware rather than  cheap hacked PC based boxes.............

In my book that all that reads as Reliable software. Well done Mitel.

Wouldn't it be fun to create a little contrib that uploads everybody's uptime to a central webserver on a daily basis (e.g. contribs.org?). That way we would get a nice overview of the typical uptime of a SME server, which in turn would be a great marketing tool to demonstrate the reliability of SME/Linux.

I bet tools like that already exist. Does anyone know of similar projects?

The former www.e-smith.com was retired after 502 days uptime. I'd recommend upgrading more than that, though. :-)

There's one in the setup of SME itself which phones home periodically. We can hardly expect them to publish the details of what they receive, but it might form the basis of what you want.

My best uptime is 190 days for 5.6, installed in April and rebooted on Oct 10th for latest updates.
