Topic: Win XP VPN?

I'm running SME 5.6 and I need to connect to a VPN server at work using Win XP.  Will checking the Enable VPN connection check box in the user manager allow me to do this or is the problem some where else?

No problems for me.

Configure the number of simultanious PPTP connections and save settings and all should be fine.

though connecting via vpn to the server ,, i'm not able to brows the internet any more don't know id it's my configuratin error or not. But as i understand you only want to access some computer on the network behind the server? this should work ok.

When you try to connect, there is a properties TAB
Click on the networking TAB and select tcp/ip properties
Click on the advanced TAB and disable "Use default gateway on remote network" on the general TAB.

I'm not sure that I'm asking the right question yet.  I have an XP machine on the local network and I'm trying to VPN to a sever on an MS network using the MS VPN client.

Any thoughts?

Well, are you having a problem?  How about :

- what server are you connecting to? (what is it? windows? linux?)
- what's the problem? is there an error? what's the message?
- what 'MS network'? What are the details? where is it in relation to the 'XP machine' you are connecting from? what is between them?

Please, if you take the time to consider the information, then supply the information, you can never supply too much considered information. Know what I mean?

The VPN fails to connect.

 - what 'MS network'? What are the details? where is it in relation to the 'XP machine' you are connecting from? what is between them?
 
The XP machine is on the local network behind the SME gateway server.

And where is the windows 2000 server? is there anything between the SME server and the internet? Is there anything between the internet and the windows 2000 server?

Without any particulars, it sounds like the VPN traffic is being blocked somewhere along the route between the xp workstation and the 2k server.

No, there is no error message. I just tries to reconnect.

The chain from the laptop (XP machine) to the server in;

XP machine
Linksys 5 port hub
SME 6.0b3 Gateway Server
Cable modem
ISP
Windows Server


I plugged the XP machine strait into the cable modem and it connected fine.

I tried it again and there is an error message 619: A connection to the remote server could not be established.

The thing that's throughing me off is that it works fine when I go directly from the XP machine to the cable modem.  Would that indicate that it something in the firewall?  If so, is there a way to work around it?

Did you make sure your ip address of your machine is on a diffrent sub range to that in which you are trying to vpn into eg work is 192.168.0.X and your laptop should be somthing like 192.168.1.x it has to be on a diffrent sub range so it knows where to rout the information. Try changing your laptop address manually
