Installing BIND on SME 6.0 Final
« on: January 04, 2004, 11:49:46 PM »
Just a idea...that I'm trying to get figured out before the new servers go in at where I work.

Since TinyDNS doesn't handle PublicDNS things.....or it's not safe to do so.

Why not just install BIND on the server, and make it listen to the outside network, and only answer public requests???

I mean, that sounds probably the best way to do it.

And I don't want to use the Dynamic DNS either. It just isn't how this school is setup, we manage all of our own stuff.

Has anyone done this, or point me in the right direction to where we could get these RPMS from to even do this??

Thanks heaps

Yeah some like that would be good. The way e-smith goes out to the master name servers is a but hit and miss and really dns only works about 90% of the time via e-smith? I have hard coded the dns in my e-smith box to use dns from my isp but a module would be better.

I found some  things with Public DNS things and a HowTo with SME 6 using TinyDNS for the Public, which it can do if you look on TinyDNS's web site. And DNSCache will be used for the internal network.

I think that is the plan, It'll all be tested this and next week. I'll let you know how it go's, and when it's done I'll post a the HowTO or my own how to.

Thanks
