I am currently using SME 5.1.2 as a backup device and mail server on a Netgear ND520 network disk drive box. This is a minimal spec box with a 20gig disk, 200mhz cyrix processor, single IDE port with no DMA controller and no I/O save a 10/100 mbit ethernet port. To get it working I loaded SME server onto the hard disk with an old PC and then fitted the disk back into the netgear box. If SME is loaded with DMA access on by default, it fails to boot in the netgear box.
I want to fit a larger faster HDD, but DMA access seems to be enabled by default on SME 5.6 and 6.0 installs.
Can any kind soul tell me whether DMA can be disabled before, during or after install. I've tried using setprop as follows but with no luck:
/sbin/e-smith/config setprop hdparm status disabled
