Making a dialup connection

OK, if this is a silly question, please forgive me but I couldn't work it out from the documentation -

Say I have my SME 5.5 box configured as a server/gateway, in a network with 2 x Win 98 boxes. I am on a 56k dialup connection and want to browse the net or check email. Is it just a matter of firing up IE or Outlook, and the server automatically connects?

I understand that you can configure the server to disconnect after short, medium or long duration times, but can you also disconnect manually if necessary?

The www.dungog.net site has a purchasable component for controlling connections from a Win PC.
Alternatively, at the command prompt, I think that you could do
service diald stop
to close the connection, although using the "service" command is not recommended as best practice.
Do
service diald start
or
serviec diald restart
to start the service again.
