Topic: FTP Access with .htaccess authentication

I wanna open my FTP server (sme 5.6 update 6) for public use. I wanna use a .htaccess file to let the users authenticate to the ftp server. Can anybody help me do it? I spend a lot of time editing custom templates, but nothing worked.....and I don't know what to do anymore

httacess is apache specific item.
so as far as I am concerned apache (httpd) does not do ftp....

But is it possible to let FTP users authenticate to a password file or something like that?

ie one can easily manage ftp users (and authentication) if it is set up as an ibay.

Also there are some other contribs that do it more expertly - see/contribs/network utilities.

I dont want to let the FTP server authenticate the SME user accounts or an IBAY name/password. But wanna have a seperated password file I can use! In that file will be NONE of the users that has an account on my SME box. So in a few words.....How can ProFTPD use another password file then the e-smith password files??
