pppoe disconnecting
« on: June 28, 2004, 06:10:48 AM »
I had a 5.5 working great.

I made a new install 6.01sme, restored the previously backdup of the configuration and ALL IS WELL!

However the pppoe link - through a DLink ADSL modem in bridge mode (which worked fine with 5.5) - seems to drop  somestimes after a few minutes and rareley lasting more than 1/2 a day.

Ive no idea why as the link/modem worked perfect for months with 5.5.

Any ideas where to start looking would be appreciated.

Do you have any other equipment hanging off the adsl line?? I had an external modem hanging off my dsl line (with a filter of course) and the pppoe was dropping regularly, pulled the line from the modem and now it very rarely plays up. (stuffed up my hylafax but the dsl is working great :-((

NO! nothing past the LAN connection to the ADSL has changed: just the phone on the other side!

Browsing log files it seems (maybe)
a 'message' line says 'serial link appears
disconnected'
then adds 'script /etc/ppp/ip-down started'

last three connects are 5.6, 45.1, 6.1 minutes!

The config is 'dedicated server & gateway', PPPoE
and the settings must be right to get a connect at all!

It does occur to me that the 5.5 was a dialup modem before becoming ADSL - I did backup the 5.6 settings to desktop and restore onto 6.01: could it have thrown back somehow?

TIA Rob

Hi,

I dunno if it's possible for you, but I would try to do a fresh install (possibly on another disk), and look fi the connection is still good after (saying) 1 or 2 days.

If yes, it's definitively an upgrade trouble, then you should carefully inspect the two /home/e-smith/configuration' file.

Maybe would you find the differences here.

HTH,

Thank you for your help!

No I cannot fresh install, but I did look at the configuration: sadly there are no significant differences (just different IP, domain, admin etc.)

By the way, mt french is not as good as your english  :-( what is HTH?

Aussie,
I'm fairly sure that your problem is not related to the server. I would disconnect ALL other devices from the dsl line so that the only device connected to the line is the dsl modem and see how that goes. As you increase the speed and distance from the exchange the service becomes more 'fickle' I'm guessing that you probably have a high speed service (1.5M or 512k) and that you are located close to the maximum allowed distance from the exchange. Can you post the relevant section from your log files? BTW HTH means "Hope That Helps" (and BTW means By The Way :-))

Ive been checking the ISP logs on log in time...

It seems something is interferring during office hours only (although that is also when it is busy).
(Im checking to see if anything has been put on the network I dont know about!)

The /var/log/pppoe/current file indicates

Could be some kind of driver issue just for fun try another "different" brand network card.
