Gamez over VPN
« on: August 02, 2004, 01:21:18 PM »
Hi Guys and girls,

I wanna play some gamez over my vpn server.
So users connect to this, and we play some warcraft over it.
Anyway it works good.
I can ping them, they can see my shares and visa versa.
Now the problem:
i create (for example) a Quake III server, they can connect to it, ONLY via /connect ipadres

They cant see the game in the LAN list.
They same problem with Unreal Tournament.

In warcraft u cant connect like this /connect ipadres

U need to see the network game in their list.

Anyone knows what this can be?

Regards

I'm pretty sure it has to do with 'UDP Broadcasts' not making it through the VPN connections.

Seems this community knows nothing about this issue. But it has been dealt with by the BeOS community. This can be done with a BeOS VPN server, with some heavy modification, but it CAN be done. I will surely come and post you any more info I find, as I think we only have each other here....

This link describes the issue and Linux fix: here...

This is the How-to referred to in first link: here...

A search of the forums found this

http://www.simsart.org/cybernews/howtos/Howto-Install-Unreal-Tournament-Server-on-SME-5.1.2.htm

Admitedly it doesn't involve VPN connection and is an older version of SME (E-Smith) but it might help you.

I'm back.......!!

arno.. go and get M0n0Wall v1.1. Be sure and set the proper firewall rules and your all set. Have your buddies VPN to that and away you go. I just did it and it solved all my VPN gaming issues in one swipe! Don't know what could be so different, but I know it works! Sorry SME community... but this works...

We are fine with monowall working. All probs with gaming over VPN are for sure the reason why nearly all the game-companies do write somewhere in their TOC/disclaimers/Readmes that gaming over VPN IS NOT SUPPORTED.

Using SME 6.0 and the Gamers Internet Tunnel works Fine but can be difficult to set up as it requires settings to be added for each game. Basically put, GIT starts a server and listens for broadcasts then pushes these through to the client on port 213 where git re-broadcasts them at the client end. The GIT server can be run on any machine on the network, and can also be used over pptp (makes life easier), forwarding ports and setting the external/internal ip trans up works as well if you don't want to VPN.

http://www.morpheussoftware.net/git/

This has been working fine for me, I originally used this on an IPSEC vpn b/n 2 sme 5.6 boxes but opted for the simplicity of pptp on my sme 6 boxes and just let the windows clients VPN in.

http://lanforced.com is hosted on an sme 6 and the venue is also run by sme box(es).
