Its monday, day after Thanksgiving weekend 2004.
We have 2 SME servers deployed in 2 separate businesses, and both have slow inaccessible web and mail this a.m. Both have different domain names, broadband providers, server hardware.
The only thing in common is that they are both SME 6.0Final and located within 10 miles of each other.
1 has spamassassin and clamav. the other has sa only, installed a few months ago and while not so helpful, has been working okay.
We can't seem to figure out why something is wrong today on both servers on the same day?! worm?
when i am at the admin console and choose 'test internet access' which always works, it now comes back failed.
i couldnt even get to contribs.org to search around and to post this topic.
i shutdown, then connected a netgear router and enabled dhcp server and rebooted users. now i can get on fine. web is fine.
so its something on the SME. I went in the admin web page and mail logs looks fine from what i can tell.
Here's what i always wanted to know, but didn't need to ask until now:
- what logs should i investigate to see if routing is okay,
- if email services is okay,
- if disk space is okay,
- is squid full? stuck? how to clear?
- is pop or imap full? stuck? how to clear?
- if cpu and ram is okay,
- run a 'checkdisk?
- how do you do a antivirus scan? i'm a gui housecall kinda dude. i need to learn command line stuff and what to download and run.
- defrag?
- more importantly, how to do network diag, lan, system diag, all that stuff to figure out what might be wrong, beyond my skills of just ping, trace, and stuff...
i ran 5.5 last year so i'm on SME for 2+ years now and its high time i learn how to keep it running and to maintain and troubleshoot it.
i did a contribs search for 'troubleshooting' 'maintenance' and no articles match.
Help!
Thanks!
