Topic: NIC ? Hub?

Hi

Im going to install the SME Server V5 to set up my local network and needed a recommendation for a hub and nics for the pcs..? something people already use?
or have used reliably.
Names and maybe links would be very helpful

Go to www.redhat.com and have a look at their Hardware database If you can use it in Red Hat you can use it in E-smith. We only use 3Com 3c905c-tx-m and 3Com Hubs as required. They seem as good as it gets for the price.

I have been using Trendnet cards based on RTL8139 chipset, and they GENERALLY work OK and are nice and cheap. But from looking at the boards, the RTL81XX chipsets seem to be responsible for a lot of grief, perhaps go for Kingston or one of the big boys ?

The Realtek chipsets are generally very poor in performance; tulip is generally _very_ good.  See http://www.scyld.com/network/ for a whole lot of information about various chipsets and drivers.

I like Netgear for the price. Their NICs come with the best documentation I've ever seen on a piece of hardware. I've put in several FA310TX's without a problem, but haven't had any success with the FA311 that the big retail stores are replacing the 310 with...

Check out www.pricewatch.com for price listings. www.dealmac.com is geared toward Macs, but they usually have some good deals in their networking section...

Hey, I am using the NIC: 3Com 3C90-509B, which is running perfectly. I have a Target 8-port HUB (quite cheap, but still, no probs at all!).
