Could this HW be used for a small server?
« on: January 15, 2005, 05:53:01 PM »
Hi there

I'm running a SME 5.6 on an very old laptop (266 MHz, with only 112 MB RAM) and it actually serves well as mail server.

Now I plan to upgrade to something bigger than that, as I need it as web-server as well.

I'm still looking for a cheap solution, and have found these elements to put together as a new server:

AMD Sempron 2200+ (or 2300+)
ASRock K7S41GX
512 MB noname RAM

Anyone knows if this combination will work together and especially together with SME?

Thanks for any help!

This may not be a great big help as I am still a very new user to SME....

But I've but a simple server using a Via 600 mhz fanless board, and 512 mb of RAM. Outside of some odd slowness when first connecting to the box (by either SSH or IMAP), the server really flys.

I'm presently running both Mysql and Postgres, ClamAV and Spam Assasin, with some other various bits and bobs. I'm kinda like yourself, I need to run about a dozen low-mid level web sites and email servers.

So your spec would easily do circles around mine! I think you should be ok.

.. would be fine - now all you need to do is add a coupla SATA drives (for software RAID) and use the latest custom ISO (only ISO that provides SATA support for install).

Now, eventhough this ISO is very new (coupla days), Marco's stuff is generally very good; some people are reporting success already.  Check the thread here.

Downside is if it don't work the SATA drives are orphaned.

I also use a gigabit NIC in my server for the LAN side so local uploads to my ftp site fly.

Make sure you get a good PSU (at least 350-400W; clean stable power should always be the base of any system.

As AMD CPU's run hotter than Intel I would also focus on ventilation.  The standard cases I use have an 8" fan at the back and a 5.25" at the front for the HDD's.

I totally agree with that. One of the reasons why I went with the Via because it is fanless and very quiet!

Granted, I have to contend with a normal IDE HD but thats a decent trade off compared to noise and heat.

Thanks all!

It's sure not a great industry server I'm up for. I shall only host my mail server and a few web sites. It already does (with the old HW I described) so this should be OK.

Thanks again.
