SME Server 6.5 Beta1 + Beta2 + RC1 - Community Feedback

Oh right.

So I need to upgrade first to 6.0.1 and then do the upgrade to 6.5b2?  Is that correct and supported?

Sorry if this was posted elsewhere, does anyone know when 6.5 will be available as a full Release Candidate?

When it is ready.

Although the upgrade option is offered, 6.5b2 is not designed to do an update of any version. But some people have successfully updated from 6.0 and 6.01.

Upgrading is only supported for unmodified 6.0 or 6.0.1 installations.  There are many contribs out there that have templates that will cause problems with the way many of the services are being handled now.

Notice that an updated SA is installed anyway (as it was with 6.0) but not started by default. Do I need an old forum entry that reminds me how to start SA in 6.0 or are there further plans.

Did you find a way to start the SA that comes installed on the beta.  I have added spammassassin as a server and set the status to enabled, but don't see any changes.
/sbin/e-smith/config show spamassassin
spamassassin=service
    status=enabled

I didn't see any actions or events to run as well.
What more must I do to activate this and test it?

Thanks,

JB

fyi..for anyone else testing this.  I did manage to get the service to start by doing this:

/sbin/e-smith/config set Spamassassin service
/sbin/e-smith/config setprop Spamassassin status enabled
ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/e-smith-service S90spamassassin

But, I am stuck from there.  Someone in the know, do I need to set something similiar to what is set on my 6.01-01 server?
i.e.

/sbin/e-smith/config setprop InternalInterface InternalInterfacesFilter SOMETHING
/sbin/e-smith/config setprop InternalInterface EnternalInterfacesFilter SOMETHING

Thanks for the help.

partitions on sme 6.5beta2
« Reply #20 on: February 18, 2005, 06:50:54 AM »
I just installed sme6.5b2 using software RAID1 on a old IBM PII 233MHz 2x4.2Gb with 96Mb RAM and surprisingly it installed OK, about 30 minutes to install and 10 minutes to configure. Only problem encountered was it did not like the on board NIC which supposedly is supported ie Intel 82557 e100 driver, it identified it correctly but would just not proceed past that driver selection screen. The message was "Unknown" driver. I shutdown & plugged in a PCI NIC Intel 100 card and it then worked OK & allowed the configuration to complete.

Reviewing the disk space and partition sizes I see the following. I get 2.6Gb of usable space out of the 4.2Gb on the disk(s).
It looks like 1Gb of space is used in another partition.

Can anyone more knowlegable in partitions and what to expect with sme 6.5 please comment. Is 2.6Gb as much space as I will "get" out of these drives ?

Thanks

Hi

One thing I am finding with 6.5b2 is that adding domains times out. This is a reasonably fast 3.2Ghz machine with dual sata raid disks. It now has about 150 domains on it (so that won;t help :-}).

When I add a domain and have top running, S55tinydns  runs for about 10 minutes at 99% CPU before finally dissapearing. The httpd.conf is rebuilt for the ibay but not when the domain is added and I have to manually expand it. The domain appears to be added correctly everywhere else.

Any ideas (besides the cron job I have set to run every 10 minutes to expand the httpd.con file)

Regards
kevin

You should probably put this one in the bug trakker, to ensure it is being addressed... look pretty serious if actually the case. regards.   christian

Small typo - should be S50tinydns-conf (currently at 99.9%).

Sorry to ask the developers (shad, charlie, michael, greg), but where are the changelog and the changed_rpms files of the RC1 release?

These files used to be on this directory:

+ SME Server 6.5 RC1 ISO

Where are they now?

Cheers,
-Nuno

I upgraded a small SME6.0 server to new hardware running SME6.5RC1.  I used the backup to desktop feature.

The upgrade went very smooth, though the server is only used as a gateway and file server.

I especially like the LogWatch utility, which showed up in my inbox this morning...

Great work.

Quick question:

Is the current 6.5 development/release candidate the same as the port to Centos project?

I have used e-smith since 4.1.2 and currently administer 7 6.0.1 SME servers.  If the current 6.5 development is seperate from the port to Centos effort, what will this mean to this forum?  I would appreciate any input regarding the possible upgrade options for the 6.0.1..

Thanks,

ryan

Ryan,

No - 6.5 isn't Centos it's all RHlegacy7.3.

The main programmer S(had)Lords has something going on at lordsfam.net
he also said (in this very thread):
Quote

will cause problems with the way many of the services are being handled now.

NOTE:
SMESERVER 7.0alpha3 -afaik- the (sole) work of
Charlie Brady is based on Centos 3.4
and available at the (old) e-smith depositories namely:
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/e-smith/devel/isos/

Regards
Reinhold

P.S.: 7.0alpha3 runs beautifully here and it's (finally) got a kernel (&stuff) that's working at year 2004+ hardware
- no complaint here, I am always greatful for the work, just plain enthusiasm  8-)  8-)  8-)
