Are their really any new features in SME 6.5
« on: February 07, 2005, 12:14:26 PM »
Hi

Are their really any chanages in SME 6.5 as the Server-Manager looks just the same with a few added features like MTRG Graphs etc

Why aren't the developers upgrading to the latest linux core, updating to the latest apache, mysql, php, phpmyadmin, Squid Proxy Server.

Thats what I would like to have everything above in the new version if possible.

Matthew

I agree Matt in that why does it seem that Samba is the only package that gets an update.

My thinking is that the back end of SME is very dependant on things like Apache, MySQL and the Kernel.  Upgrading these would take a bit testing and time.

But in saying that from what I have read so far, a user has installed SME 6.5 and upgraded MySQL to version 4.1.  My other qaum is that they don't include a few basic packages, that you would think everyone needs like AV and Spam removal stuff (only way I could think of saying it).

In conclusion I think they may leave this extent of upgrading to version 7 of SME, fingers crossed.

Well, why aren't you doing it? Or paying someone to do it?

There is no need to be a jerk. The guy was just asking a question and a valid question at that. He did not say it in any attacking way, so what is the problem?

I wasn't intending to attack anyone or to be a jerk. I was asking a valid question. It's just as valid for me to ask person A why they have not done something as it is for person A to ask why person B has not done something.

There is no Fairy Godmother. People need to get used to this idea.

What is the point of the new version, if not to include new features or newer packages?

Clue us in on a valid reason, not, "Well, why aren't you doing it? Or paying someone to do it?"

How about a few of these reasons:

- security fixes
- numerous bug fixes
- secure email (new feature)
- Samba 3 (new feature)
- Ibay recycle bins (new feature)

and a quick read of http://no.longer.valid/news/article.php?storyid=38 will shed some more light on the major updates and changes.

There are always things that people want that are not included.  Often there is great interest in new features.  But there is only enough resource to maintain a stabilized set of features.

That's why so many other people are developing scripts and add-ons.  And I believe that's what Charlie meant by saying you are free to develop it or pay someone to do it for you.

Other software is easily installed for your individual needs and we provide this site to discuss and promote the use of all of it.

Whilst I appreciate Charlie's opinions the way he expressed them were unreasonable.  Yes if you don't know how to do it yourself there are plenty of people around on this forum that will be willing to help or as stated for a fee.

As to the packages and updates, again I reiterate my first post, that MySQL and PHP had not been mentioned, yet there is no doubt security updates in these packages .

But in saying that, there is really not "much" of an update in features, thus I then pose the question, why such a big increase in the version number from 6.0.1 to 6.5  To my way of thinking that is a big jump.

Just my little bit of Wisdom/stupidity (depends on which side of the fence you are on) :)

girkers,

If Charly Brady, who happens to be a developer (and there aren't that many in the SME community)
is telling you that a) there are new features   b) "Well, why aren't you doing it? Or paying someone to do it?"
calling him a "jerk" won't really improve things.

If jcoleman, who is "running" iow paying things around here, is giving you a couple of other "reasons"
_and_ explaining "what Charlie meant" why does it not settle things enough for you.

Charlie Brady was paid for this kind of work until
"Mitel found out people are complaining but not paying" ... so to speak
- is anybody paying him now?

ShadLords, who has been called here instrumental in creating this beta,
seems to be angry about this "gimme, gimme, gimme" kind of attitude I cannot fail to notice here too.

When was the last time you did say THANK YOU on receiving a freebie???
-instead of "I don't like the colour and it's too small"
Ever heard: "You get what you pay for" ?

Regards
Reinhold

Reinhold (and others) I feel I might be being misunderstood as I may not have expressed it correctly.  I am highly appreciated of all the work that people do on this product and as I don't have the money I can't really pay for it.

So I volunteer to help (before it was taken over by Lycris (can't remember now)) by giving my time to test things and stuff.  If you look at the Volunteer forum you will see that there is a lot of people in the community that are willing to help.

I have personally upgraded PHP and some other packages on my SME box and they are working fine, but how do I test them to a standard to ensure that they will be fully compatible with a full release.  Is there any documentation on doing this, I haven't been able to find it.

I love this product and as I am not in a position to pay for it, I want to help develop it.  I am not a programmer nor a developer of any kind, but what I am good at is computers.  Thus I want to use my computer skills to help this project, but how can I help something that doesn't need any help?
