Topic: Broadband speed.

I am due to be getting a free upgrade to my broadband from 1Mb to 2Mb.

I connwect my SME box in server/gateway mode to a Speedtouch Pro router.

Does anyone know of a way to determine the current connection speed on my external interface, so that I can compare the speed now, and the hopefully twice as fast future?

You should check the T&C's of your new 'free' upgrade. While upping your downstream, BT has taken the liberty to cut back your monthly usage allowance!

In any case, don't forget BT has upstream restrictions of 256 kbs, so if your hosting anything (P2P, Streaming Audio, Websites), all the downstream bandwidth in the world won't matter.

I just switched over to Bulldog in the UK and am pretty impressed with the speeds. I'm getting 4 meg down, and 512 up which is pretty impressive.

UKOnline offers 8 meg down, and 400 up, but they impose a 50 gig monthly restriction which seems stupid to me. Also, they only offer dynamic IP's.

I think HomeChoice also go up to 4 meg, but I don't know what the upstream is.

Nope, that's pretty much what I would expect within the accuracy of the test.  That is real data speed with all the overhead packets subtracted from the final figure.  Hey, if I can pull down a 545Mb ISO in well under an hour, I'm happy

ADSL with 20:1 contention & no packet loss.  Ha! If I could get SDSL here, believe me I would.  So far, only 5 others on my exchange have requested it

Over here SDSL is still far too expensive...
so after a month of "no surcharge testing" <g> I went back, regarding cost/performance I finally had installed and now use 2MBit cable

Nowadays I get my Knoppix/Kanotix (iow 700MB CD) on a 2Mbit cable "in well under ...you know what" ...
"The cable guys" programm the docsis modem "quite nicely" so I do receive my full 2Mbit/s, 250kbyte/s *60*60= 900MByte/hour

20:1 contention sounds fair ... but maybe you just phone them until you get a "real technician" on line ... they tend to be sympathetic

Who said SDSL was cheap?  For 1Mbit here it's about 350 euro per month, and over 1,200 euro to install & buy a router!

I could justify this because I run servers for clients & it would be nice to bring some of them in-house.
