GSX Server on SME. Purely for testing various OSs.

Hi Duncan,

this sounds very interesting for me. Could you please explain your way to work with GSX on SME with a little "howto". I know, there was a long thread about this based on the post by gbl (http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=22851.msg107566#msg107566)
So, I think it would be very useful to have this howto after the reorganization by ruffdogs, because günther (gbl) would only publish his howto for free if contribs.org are totaly free in future.

Rgds.

I am on my way out the door for a weeks course away - so I cannot really do anything for a week or so.

In my contribs directory is a rpm that helps set up GSX Server on SME.

I simply compiled the rest from source as per the GSX Server howto from vmware.

Hi Duncan,

in the meantime I could solve the way to install it by myself. So this is my howto to install the gsx-server for the 6.01-01:

1. Download the dev-tools (Version for SME 6.01-01) at http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/hpe/devtools-6.01/dev-rpms/
and install them with rpm -Uvh --nodeps *.rpm

2. For a full X in the remote console on another computer, install the X libraries from http://ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/7.3/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/XFree86-libs-4.2.0-8.i386.rpm with rpm -Uvh X*.rpm

3. Now it's time to install the VMware-GSX-Server. This ist possible with the original VMware-installation-guide at http://www.vmware.com/support/gsx3/doc/install_linsteps_gsx.html#1027718
The install-script will compile a stand alone version with the dev-tools. It should go by accepting the questions with default answers. For experienced users it is be possible to set the location for the VM's in an ibay with setting it at /home/e-smith/files/ibays/vmware/files. But this is also later configurable, when using the windows or linux-client.

4. Install the VMware Management Interface
This can also be done with the original VMware-installation-guide at http://www.vmware.com/support/gsx3/doc/install_lin_mui_gsx.html#1027856
Giving the default answers on the questions should be right and that's it.

5. To finish the installation, it must be integrated in the special SME-Server architecture. Thanks a lot to Duncan Thomas, who created a brilliant rpm for handling this with installing templates for services, hosts.allow and xinetd.conf and deals with vmware-authd. Here it is: http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dthomas/smeserver/6.x/Contrib/GSX%20Server/smeserver-vmware-authd-0.1-1.noarch.rpm
Before reboot the server, do not forget:
/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop vmware status enabled
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event console-save

That's it.

Rgds.

Many people (including developers) do it routinely without any problems
