Topic: Getting started with gateway/server mode

I'd like to test SME, but I'm a bit confused as to how I can get it up and running in our existing network.  (I've always had problems getting IP addressing correct, for some stupid reason.)  We're currently running on W2K Server with all W2K Pro clients (except for 2 Mac 10.3.9 clients).  All of this is behind a Netgear router, serving DHCP, connected to the internet via DSL.  Subnet is 192.168.1.0/24.

I would like to install SME as a gateway/server, hoping to eventually replace our W2K server with it.  How can I do that if I already have a DHCP being served by the router (also acting as firewall) on the network?

Also, any ideas on how to safely test email in such an environment?  I don't want to screw up existing email being done through Exchange.

If you need to experiment you would be best to setup a sme server in gateway mode on a standalone network with a cheap dial up connection and a free domain from dyndns.org.

After you have learnt what sme is all about you can then look at how to integrate to your Windows network.
Initially you would be best to do this in server only mode, email would still work to and from the sme server locally. Turn of DHCP & domain controller on the sme server if a Window server is already doing that.

The SME should work perfectly for your situation.

Replace the Netgear with the SME box.  Internal (LAN) IP is same as Netgear's internal, and SME speaks PPPoE directly to the DSL modem.  Reboot the workstations (not really necessary, but easy to convey to the users) and voila.
