I have a bit of a problem with FTP.

I am running a small network with SME Server 6.0.1-01 installed.

However, something in the settings seems to be stopping users from getting FTP access to remote servers. Using an FTP client such as "CuteFTP" it is not possible to log in to remote servers, which is very strange. If I by-pass SME Server by 'hot wiring' my computer straight into the broadband router, there is no problem!

I have checked the settings in the control panel, and FTP service is ticked.

When I run a port scan, it says the FTP port (21) is open.

Any ideas??

Hi,
Could you define a bit more? I think the configuration you made is ok, but is your SMEserver on a lan or on the internet?
I have tried too the ftp option but only on a lan... I'm still in the process of understanding and trying a lot and i found that accessing it through IE with ftp://ip-adres gave a result, (it said that i did not configure ftp correctly) but there was a connection although i new this was hard.
Give some more details and i'll think along... I'm still trying several options of this server, so, be positive and think "We will succeed!"
bye

the server is on the LAN, but acts as the 'gateway' through which all computers on the LAN access the broadband router.

however, i was not referring to getting ftp access to the server on our LAN, but rather FTP access to other servers on the internet (hosted by other people). Basically I can only download from other FTP sites using Internet Explorer, and if I want to use an FTP client to download or upload I can't do either!!

I know what you mean about staying positive; I don't like this things to beat me!!

Hi there

Quickie : Did you enabled port-forwarding or pinholes to allow external services to access your SME server?
