At wits end with Windows Dhcp,Dns ready to try Sme
« on: November 28, 2005, 09:41:11 PM »
I want to try Sme server but what are the leaps i will have to take to make it work with my windows setup.  Currently i have one server- windows 2003 on a dell poweredge, and 10 windows Xp pro clients. My Wan is a cable modem and we do not host are own web or email.

Can anyone please give me some light on how I go about Sme server, I take it that it has to be installed on its computer.

Read the Documentation link at the left of this screen.

Check Installation and the Manuals as a minimum.

After reading those, post further questions back here.

Your question is a little too broad . First off what featues do you intend to use it for.  I have been using the software since 2000 and running on a 166mzh system with 32mb ram and a 2 gig harddrive when I only used it to share an internet connection. Then as I started using more features I moved up to a 266mzh with a 10 gig drive then up to a 400mzh with a 20 gig and currently it runs on a 600mzh system with 80 gig drive.

Mine currently handles all of the following  DHCP,Email ,FTP ,webserver and internet gateway. In the next few months it is going to become my sole network file server and possibly print server.

Take a look at this http://cell.homeftp.org/requirementsme.htm
its a snipit out of the manual that shows the hardware requirements.

It might help you figure out what hardware to run it on.  Basically IMHO its pretty easy to install especially if you take a look at the manual. Basically you just download the ISO then burn it to a disk, pop the diskin the cdrom of the system you intend to use. When it boots it will install and ask you 3 or 4 questions to make sure you want to install it then it installs and after the reboot it asks for some general installation information. So out the box you should be able to setup dhcp and set it up as your gateway to the internet with minimal issues.

I basically ran mine out the box as only a internet gateway to share out a highspeed connection with out the manual in the beginning and after that every 6-8 months I would get adventurous and play around with the other features. Eventually I wanted to see what else it would do so I got the manual.

Start small then work your way up to using all the features this software has. I think you will be happy with the results.

as long as you require a file server only option and have no microsoft add on requirements ie: sql server, it is a great replacement. be aware there is no user level security only group and directory level security, no file level.
