:-?
which version should i download?
6.01 is too old. probably not centos.
but i read somewhere, we can not upgrade from any beta.
so can we upgrade from centos?

i dont know about 6.5. it's 'still' rc1.
will it upgradeable to 7????

i really like to take 7. but again, it's beta.
i fear i have to reinstall everything when the v7 released.

it's for production use.

 :-?

or, should i take the hard way. install ubuntu server. then manually install each services one by one??

please help...

tia.

Depends what you want it for.

Look at your priorites. Do you want a stable, easily managed platform as a server, or must you have a centos based system? I could rephrase this as 'Do you want a safe, reliable, comforable family sedan, or do you want something with mag wheels and green racing stripes?'

v6.01 is the stable release. Runs well and has many updates applied through YUM.

v6.5RC1 runs quite stable and has many updates also applied through YUM. I use this and have had absolutely no problems over 6 months.

V7.x.y.z (whatever) are beta and **as per documetnation on this site** should not be used in production.....but great to get the feel of what SME V7 will be.

Cheers

What are you going to use it for?  And while 6.01 is getting on a bit, it's fast, stable and ... IF you don't tart it up with a bunch of contribs ... secure out of the box.

Hi,

It's my understanding that SME7 will upgrade a plain MSE 6.0.1 server... but you can have trouble if you load a bunch of contribs.

So you ask yourself a couple of questions.

  1.  Does SME6 work with my hardware?  SATA can be a problem.

  2.  If I load SME6 do I need to add contribs or can I wait.

If it were me and I need a stable environment and the hardware I wanted to use would work with SME6, I'd use SME6. Refrain form adding panels. Then when 7.x is final, upgrade to 7.x and add panels.

If you absolutely must add panels, I'd keep a careful log of everything you add so you can do an rpm -e contrib_name before upgrading. Of course, there could be hidden problems, but that should work.
