Backup to Workstation SLOW, v7B8
« on: December 22, 2005, 12:46:09 AM »
I tried using the Backup to Workstation through Firefox and found it intolerably slow.

The server-manager panel stated that the backup would be about 9 GB in size and when the transfer started it started out ok, but after a short time was down to just over 10k/s. As you could appreciate this is not really going to be practical.

I am running a 100MB ethernet network.

Are you sure you don't mean the generic Back and restore panel, and 'Backup to desktop' feature?

If you search the forums and bug tracker you will find Backup to Desktop encounters file size limitations, based on the OS and format of the destination hard drive. 9GB is well over the limit.

My contribs backup2ws and backup2usb overcome these file size limits by splitting the backup in multiple admin defined volume sizes. Lots of info available on these contribs by searching the forums.

I've seen this on V6 before!

I'd try doing a limited backup of  an inactive group of files on the server, & see if the problem is server activity or network/workstation.

I've had several networks go slow on me lately, problems disappeared after a reboot of one or more workstations & switches.

dmay,

I did the usual search and come up empty thus the reason for this post.  I agree that 9GB is an extremely large file and I would prefer to have had a means of having a HDD connected to my server, but it is a mini PC, thus I can not put a drive caddy in it and it is only USB1.

I have looked through the contribs on this site and was not able to find your contrib.  After about 10 minutes of searching I was able to find it, but from what I read, it is not quite ready for v7Beta.

I will try it and see how I go.  thanks for the help.

I beleive that the backup system in SME is inadequate to cope with the needs of the server as I am simply running a server for home that I use for file storage and email. Now if my backup is 9GB, imagine what a server in the wild would contain.  If the backup system can cope with mine, how in hell would these other servers cope with the backup?

Try Here for Darryl's Backup2ws.  I am using version .31 on my Beta8 server with no problems.  I am backing up only 2GB's worth of files, but I have had no issues.
