Long User Names and allow a dot "."
« on: January 04, 2006, 04:02:32 AM »
Many users are now used to long usernames with a dot separating the first and last names... i.e. "first.last".  The inclusion of this ability for user logons can be a deal buster, and Clarkconnect seems to do it.

That being said, Clarkconnect is actively copying some of the SME ideas... and although it is no longer directly listed on their roadmap... the cached copy shows it... http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:XGeLHZkCkn4J:www.clarkconnect.com/info/roadmap.php+sme&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

I believe we (contribs) have a much bigger community... we should be leading  the community on services offered, no?

It's already raised as a new feature request:

http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24

The original reason for short usernames and not allowing the dot was compatibility with Win 9x, though that shouldn't  be much of a concern these days.

Yes. Please volunteer whatever help you can to one of the leaders.

I can offer services as a network admin... probably limiting me to testing as I am coding ignorant...

That being said, please let me know of any way I might be of service.  I very much believe in this project.  Seems to me to take the Best of Breed (BOB) approach having made choices such as qmail as MTA... certianly not the easiest but the most secure.  Also, to me, I think this software solution is worth paying for yet it is important that it remain open giving people a choice.  I would not be bothered by a web site front page thanking people for using the software and if they are using it for business and have the cash to donate towards this project.  I would expect there are many of us who lack th ability to code but would love to contribute in some manner.  (Hey, we like to help out, too! ;)

Perhaps the best contribution such people can make is to pay a competent developer to develop the feature that they most need. Imagine if a few hundred of the businesses which use SME server did that tomorrow?

Waouh ! I'm waiting for such a system for monthes !
I agree and aplause with my four hands (I include those that i use to code with).
I demand that we put, may be on this site, a sort of "contribs trade board" or "contrib exchange" :
Example :
=========
- I badly need a contrib, or an evolution of an existing one : I ask here for this job (rsync backup with management of different versions of backuped files), offering a price (400 U$). A developper (Darrel ?), can respond that he can do it, but for a little more. When an other pro offer to add something, the deal is done an we get an new contrib released under GPL, usable by all.
- same thing for a Cie (mine, for ex.) that want to go on a dev (Asterisk) but need more ressources ...
- and so on (poor lonesome dev looking for jobs) ...
It sounds good and it's an answer to the 'economic model' of GLP development.

No ?
