Samba trouble...
« on: January 28, 2006, 03:09:26 PM »
I have just installed SME server 7.0pre1 on my server at home, and everything is running great. Well, almost everything... File transfers to and from my Windows XP laptop are ridiculously slow. 4-5 seconds for copying just one 800kb jpg file is a bit much I believe. When my server was running Suse 10, there was a similar problem, but I drastically improved the transfer times by adding "debug level = 0" in smb.conf. Now I have three questions:

1) Is there an easy way to edit my smb.conf? Vi and I just don't mix.
2) Is there an updated version of samba available for SME server?
3) Is there another way to fix this?

I will be using my server to store my music, pictures and home videos, so I need to have as much transfer speed as possible, and FTP from laptop to server on the same lan is just too much of a hazzle, when I would rather just be adding my ibays as network drives. (So the wife can figure out how to access the files)

I hope you guys can help!

SME7pre1 comes with Samba 3.XX, which is pretty much the latest version. Your problem is definitely hardware, network or client related. You should not decrease debug level. You should read the log files.  ;-) You can do that directly from the serer manager.
What do they say? When the error messages become big, there are mistakes in your network, which you should better find.
Also: Try other NIC, other cabling, other client WS. That way you can eliminate problems the tryAnderror way even without reading logfiles.  ;-)
Samba with SME7pre1 is rock-stable and runs everywhere/anywhere.
You can of course modify smb.conf in general or for single ibays. But only do this, if you know where your problem is.

Well, I have off course been google'ing like mad before posting here, that's how I got the "debug level" tip in the first place. And it really helped on my SuSE server. But wtf, I have some 3Com nics lying around, how will SME server respond if I plug one of those in?

He,

could you please tell us, what your logfiles say? :-x

Everything else is useless, if you do not try to track the error.

SME7 works with every flavour of 3com NICs i ever tried. Are you kidding?

The server is running with a 3com nic now, and Samba is running a lot better... but it is still somehow unstable, file transfer times vary quite a bit.

I'd love to, but eh... don't know how. Tell me which log files you need to see, and how I should get them for you, and I will. Any help will be appreciated!

BTW: My replacing-the-nic thread:

That is easy:

SERVER-MANAGER->Administration->view logfiles ->samba/l->view the log files listed there.

Perhaps you have to increase the error level (search forum for this).

Also you should follow the other advice, i gave you:

Change client, try direct cabling (to avoid hub/switch problems), change client  NIC. Your problem probably has nothing to do with samba.

Hmm.... it seems to be running just fine now. File transfer speeds are nice and stable, and so is printing. Maybe it was just some temporary hickups and a bad nic.

Thanks a bundle for all your help guys!

Instead of creating a new thread I thought I would use this existing one.

My log is identical (showing everything seems to run fine) but every time I try to login to \\server it rejects my password (with no errors the windows box just keeps popping up).

It's a fresh installation and I have updated all the software to what is currently available with the YUM system.

Is there something I am missing or forgot to do?  Or is it just a botched install?

FTP into the same directories work.  But I like to have the HTML and ADMIN mapped as I use them for data storage and webpage editing.
