Inbound email problem 7pre3 server only
« on: March 08, 2006, 03:26:57 AM »
I have a 7pre3 server only setup that can send email but not receive mail. I have checked my router/firewall and the correct ports are forwarded to the SME server. I am sure the port forwarding is working correctly because I can get to my web page that is forwarded to the same server. I have checked my setting and compared them to my 7pre3 at home that works fine. I have also pinged using mail.domain_name and it returns the correct public IP address. I have a test user setup on the box to try sending and receiving email so I am not trying to use the admin account. I have received my test accounts email with out problems on my work email. I reply to the mail and it never gets to back to the SME server that I can see. I have waited over a day to also make sure it wasn't just a slow delivery. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I do have pop setup to be access from the internet on the SME server.

Thanks again
Wes

From outside your network e.g at work, open up command prompt and type

telnet domain.com 25

You should receive a response

220 domain.com ESMTP qpsmtpd 0.31.1 ready; send us your mail, but not your spam.

Type quit to exit

This will prove that your forwarding of port 25 on the router is working correctly.

What do the qpsmtpd logs say? Are the emails being blocked for some reason.

Do you have a MX record set up for your domain. You theoretically shouldn't need one but it definately pays to these days.

Have you checked the admin account to make sure the emails aren't being delivered there.

If the email is undeliverable you should eventually get a bounce message back after 4-7 days to say the message was undeliverable.

I would like to thank Jon for replying to my post and giving me some help.

I noticed that we where also have some DNS issues internally. When you would type http://servername/server-manager I could not connect. Then you could type the IP address/server-manager and get connected. So I went back to my domain setting and noticed under the domain setting it was try to resolve everything with the external DNS. So I changed my setting to resolve internally and everything started working fine. The email started flowing in and DNS issues gone. So I am now rocking on 7.0pre3.

Thanks everyone
