OUTLOOK 2003 and IMAP timing out even after adjusting
« on: April 05, 2006, 09:49:28 PM »
Hi,
SMEServer 6.0.1, 3.0GHZ CPU / 2GB RAM / 30 users in two different buildings.
OUTLOOK 2003 is timing out.
Searched the forums and applied the suggested fis:
/sbin/e-smith/config setprop imap ConcurrencyLimit 200
/etc/e-smith/events/actions/imap-conf
svc -t imap (or svc -t /service/imap)

And still the users are timing out.
We still have connectivity (INTERNET and LAN) as we can still open files, and surf the net.

Can anyone offer othe ideas that may sort this out.
Thanks in Advance.

dilligaf,

I've had the same problem here ... we have about the same qty of users and we time out occationally as well ... I did notice it's mainly when the server is sending out large files ... boggs down the internet and causes the time out.

One thing SME lacks is a way to slow down the speed of email/ports outgoing without going into the heart of things and heaps of research ... as far as I have found this has been an on going problem that people have.

If you are using SME6.0.1-01 then read up on CBQ and see what you can do there.

I don't know of CBQ for SME7 yet ... haven't looked ... there's a lot of stuff about slowing incomming traffic down but not much about outgoing traffic.

One other thing large e-mails do is slow down the browsing to a snails pace or even stop it so you cannot brows at all.

Let me know and If your runing SME6.0.1-01 then I have a CBQ setup that works on outgoing e-mails ... but you have to turn it on manually ... well I haven't bothered to figure out how to turn it on automatically yet and it dropps out every day ... I just turn it on when I see problems.

This setup is on a 512/512 sync but you can modify it to suit ... for me it slows outgoing mail down to about 30k/sec ... we can upload at about 54k/sec this way the browsing can still continue and your less likely to get time outs.

My setup isn't the best but it works there are a few other ways it can be done but you will have to do a bit of searching on it.

Sorry  I can't be more help.

Regards,

Tib

Hi,
Since I posted this, I kept looking for a solution tha was related to outlook. I have tried all things that looked like they made sense, no change.
Today I set up the same acct using Outlook Express and have exact same issues delays, timeouts etc.
So, I changed the acct to POP instead of IMAP and it is a ROCKET, not one hicup, no issue.

I really wanted to make this work reliably with IMAP, and OUTLOOK2003.
I am more than happy to pay for a sure fix solution to this issue if one exists, before I go and redo all the accounts on the  PC's.

Have a look at your setting for Server Time Outs in Outlook ... under Internet E-mail settings and the advanced panel.

I set mine 3 minutes or over and seems to help a bit I think ... I get time outs about once/day maybe less.

Tib

Just a suggestion, have you tried to look at what the server is doing when you try to communicate with it.  I don't know the tools exactly, although you could use TOP to see what the processor is doing, check the HDD i/o and also the network interface all on the SME box to see what is happening. This may give you a better idea where the problem is.

Hi yes,
When this happens, I VPN in, and check TOP etc, the server is idling, literally. Also as soon as this hapens, you can still browse the net, and WEBMAIL works, no problem.
IFConfig on both cards shows no errors, retransmission etc.
