aka [ANNOUNCE] advproxy & urlfilter author offers his code
VOTE IN THE POLL ABOVE!
advproxy & urlfilter products by Marco Sondermann is a brilliant Web GUI for Squid & Dansgardian. I've used it with SmoothWall and ipCop.  It's just as good as Dungog's Dansgardian, but Marco's is free.

I contacted Marco, author of advproxy & urlfilter, and of course he will allow any serious coder to port this to SME.
Coding is beyond my ability so I am relying on the SME community.
Recently Endian Firewall ( http://www.efw.it/ ) has ported Marco's efforts into their product because Marco, a one man team, can only support smoothwall and ipcop. Does any developer wish to take this on this port?  Please reply to this and contact Marco:
marco.sondermann**AT**myrealbox**DOT**com

Another idea is to somehow have SME coexist with Webmin only for a few select modules like Dansgardian.

I converted $249AU or $99AU first year Dungog Consession License and it equals $187US for lifetime or $75US for 1st year.  Either is a bit steep for my home use.

Please don't reply with "I think SquidGuard, the CLI, Privoxy, Antivirus plug-in, yada yada, would be better/more important" because this message focuses on Dansguardian. It's the best, hands down. I don't need "better" ideas because I've already tried used them. Really, all I'm looking for and hoping to see is a developer with the same desire.

Read far below for Bounty information in red (message #13).     To make a pledge, just add a message to this thread with your email address. Protect your address.

vanasdale as this is going to take time and effort by someone, are you offering any bounty for whoever codes this for SME server?

This is simply an alert and a poll.  I'm not a coder, but I'd hope a port of existing code may be much simpler than to code from scratch. Someone who may be shy to commit themselves to a solution may find a port easier? -- I dunno.

If I'm not paying $75US for Dungog Dansguardian plus $57US per year thereafter, then would less money be enough for a bounty?

I'm trying to replace my SmoothWall for SME (single box solution). I like additional features SME offers, but the ease of maintaining the content filter on the fly for my 2 daughters is a bigger priority.

I think this is a great idea.  I have no clue how long it would take to make something like this work with sme, but I still think this is a great idea.  I have used Dansguardian and it works great with sme.  I have also used it with Clarkconnect and it is even better since there is a nice gui to go along with it.  I am sure that there are some people out there that could give a little bit if the person who has the ability to do this asked.  Just my 2 cents.

I agree, perhaps a dedicated coder could set his price.

1. A price that would be achievable by several people making pledges.
2. Dedicated would mean that fixes would be implemented within reason.
-  Bugs may be discovered in early releases
- SME updates may break the contrib
- Include source code incase the coder loses interest

Don't forget to take the poll at the top of these posts.

There are a lot of views on this entry, but only 30 votes.   :-)

Squidguard contrib doesn't work with sme 7.... and dansguardian is better than squidguard..... so it would be great to have quickly a gui just to do what the squidguard's gui offered to do: add or remove url.... this in the first time...

But i'm not a dev so i can't help.... sorry

Thanks for those who are helping promote a port of advproxy & urlfilter by Marco.
Tell the rest to read the red print up top.  ;-)

>...the ease of maintaining the content filter on the fly for my 2 daughters is a bigger priority

You are aware of the command line version, available for free, see

http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver//contribs/rmitchell/smeserver/howto/dansguardian%20instal%20&%20configure%20HOWTO%20for%20sme%20server.htm

It does not really need maintenance, in many cases just set it up initially and then forget it is there.
On those occasions you may need to tweak the config, it's very easy to make changes to config files via the command line anyway, if you follow the howto steps.

I second what Ray says, if a GUI is desired there's a squidguard contrib half-way done that I would suggest.

How about privoxy? Depending on what kind of filtering you're looking for, privoxy might work and it has a web configuration interface. Its "inappropriate content" filtering is a little weak though, it's keyword based. I haven't tried it on SME yet...

.. perhaps asking Marco if he knows anyone who could do the dev, and to also estimate the cost in time & $$$, would be a good start.

At least with these estimates we can see if this is feasible.

If feasible a 'pot' could be started to hold donations until the required total amount is available.

From a quick look this would not be a trivial task (especially as it replaces some of the squid binaries).
