web server not working SME 5.1.2
« on: February 10, 2002, 06:41:32 AM »
Hi All,

I  recently installed SME 5.1.2 on an old p150 (32Meg Ram, 2 NICs)
as a gateway/server for a home office.
It attaches to a cable modem (Optus, DHCP using computer name) at
one end and a 192.168.0.xxx network at the other.

The gateway works fine, but the web serving is not. I cannot access
the server manager from the LAN (but lynx works on the server), or access
the basic web page from the LAN. Also a port scan show 80 closed.
a 'ps -fe' on the server shows httpd running (many sessions).

Anyone suffer the same fate ? Has the Appache some how not bound itself
to port 80 ? or fallen over ?

I can send logs or other information if need be.
{whimper, help}

Just a bit of FYI....Optus does not, or at least did not, allow servers to be run on their cable Internet plan.

Try looking at the web page with the ethernet cable out of the cable modem.  If you still cannot see it, try plugging the now cableless nic into your lan.

Basicly, make sure that the cards are not reversed.

Can you ping the server? I'm assuming 192.168.0.1 You need to use a crossover cable if you are going e-smith-nic to client-nic. If the e-smith box is plugged in to a hub then use a normal patch lead. If you can ping try releasing and renewing the IP address using winipcfg on the win9x client. If you are running the port scan on the internal interface it probably will be closed, I think apache runs on port 980 internally, 80 externally. You'll need to run the port scan on the external interface to check port 80.

Correction, it's only the e-smith-manager that runs on port 980 but your problem still appears to be an underlying network problem rather than an e-smith one.

Problem solved.
I upgraded the server to a P2-233 with 128M and
different cards.
Works perfectly now.
The p150 with 32M was groaning and disk swapping
too much anyway.

Thankyou all for you help and consideration
