Internet connection problems!
« on: November 04, 2006, 08:11:48 PM »
I have problems with SME Server 7.0 because cannot access internet after I setup all necesary!

I have a connection to the internet through a LAN and 2 PC's at my home!

One of them has installed SME Server 7.0, and I setup everything for the 2 NetCards on it! (This one I want to keep it working NON STOP as DCHUB, FTP Server, e-mail, etc)

The other one I want to use it as an ordinary PC, and I want to have internet access through the other one!

The problem is that after I setup the SME Server 7.0, I can see only the GW from the server in the LAN, NO further!  >WHY?<

Can anybody help me with this problem??

How did you configure your system?

If you are using a kind or modem-router, then in the admin console, when it ask for:
Select gateway IP address, you should put the inner ip addres of your router.

An option is to configure your device (router) in bridge mode (no all models are capable).

If all this is correct then check that the routet is well configured, connet the ordinary PC and try to reach any address.

please try to be more specific in the setup configuration!

I have this IP's from my ISP:

IP: 86.106.138.161
SM: 255.255.255.0
GW: 86.107.194.1

DNS1: 212.146.75.6
DNS2: 212.146.75.98

And a NET card with HWaddr: 00:C0:26:8C:63:B9
(Only if I setup this one with the IP's from above, i can access the internet, because of HWAddr,

To be more specific: When I have used Windows only with the MAC of this one !!!AND!!! the IP's listed above I was able to access the internet, if I not put there the IP's the DHCP of my ISP could not give me access only by MAC Address (HWaddr) sometimes so the ISP recommended me to use the IP's too.)

So I plug-in this netcard in the PC with SME Server 7.0 installed, as eth1)

I have another netcard plugged in the same PC as eth0.

As far as I read the eth1 is used by SME Server 7.0 as a external interface to access the internet, and eth0 for local (internal network).

************************************************************

So, in SME Server 7.0 console, I show you what i've done STEP by STEP:

at Local network parameters (i believe this is for eth0) and I put here the IP's for internal (private) network:
> IP: 192.168.0.1

Select local subnet mask:
> SM: 255.255.0.0

Select operation mode:
> Server and gateway (I believe this is for being able to access the internet through this PC)

Select external access mode:
> Server and gateway - dedicated (I use an existing neighbourhood LAN for connecting to internet, not modem or ISDN)

Select ethernet card assignment:
> normal.....eth0 is local, eth1 is external

External Interface Configuration:
> static IP

Select static IP address:
> 86.106.138.161 (Live above)

Select subnet mask:
> 255.255.255.0

Select gateway IP address:
> 86.107.194.1  (but after I reboot this one goes as 86.106.138.1) Why?

Select DHCP server configuration: (Local (private) network)
> Off

Corporate DNS server address:
> I left it blank because I have read there >> "You should not enter the address of your ISP's DNS servers here, as the server is capable of resolving all internet DNS names without this additional configuration" hmm

So I saved configs, etc. and reboot to activate the new config.
After reboot and entered [user]root , [pass]********, etc i write in the line:

ipconfig eth0
shows> The HWaddr: 00:40:F4:1D:E1:72
 inet addr: 192.168.0.1   Bcast: 192.168.255.255   Mask:255.255.0.0
..............RX and TX packets alll 0
Interrupt: 5     Base address: 0x7400

ipconfig eth1
shows> The HWaddr: 00:C0:26:8C:63:B9
 inet addr: 86.106.138.161   Bcast: 86.106.138.255  Mask: 255.255.255.0
..............RX and TX packets alll 0
Interrupt: 10    Base address: 0x7000

And now if I ping 86.107.194.1 (GW from ISP)     is OK
but if I ping for example:   contribs.org, www.google.com, www.yahoo.com or any external IP that I know it doesn't WORK!!!! :(

*************************************************************

I like how the SME Server 7.0 is maked (Access server manager) and I think is a powerfull tool for what I need. I MUST make it work with all costs! :D

I have used linux for few times before but only basics and as u can see I'm still a noob in Linux for the moment :D but now I'm stubborn and want to use it from now one. This problem is on my had for about a week now, and I choose that is time to ask you for help! I hope I will find some help here to learn what I need and I'm sure I will  help others in the future, in return!

I think I was enough specific here, and I LOOK FORWARD for SOME SOLUTIONS!

I want to thank from now to anybody who will help me with this BIG problem of mine!

That GW address is not valid. The address of the gateway must be 86.106.138.x - it must be on the same network as IP.

You cant reach internet because the router/gateway IP must be in the same network of your external IP, otherwise there has to be a device address between your SME and the router.

OR you have to cange 1 of 2 things

1) your IP address. (something in the same calss C network of the router: 86.107.194.XXX)

2) the mask might change to 255.0.0.0 (to have an A class network)

Because a class C network sould be:

IP    86.106.138.161
SM  255.255.255.0
GW 86.106.138.XXX

this must help you!

This is unrelated to your problem but If I were running only a few clients I would run a class C as my internal network.

Bcast: Not greater then 192.168.0.254
