The internet

"The internet" works just fine.  Something about your server is not working right, perhaps because it has been misconfigured. People here will be more likely to help you if you provide more information about exactly how you have configured things, and exactly what works and what does not work.

Thats the problem,

I install sme (fresh install) run through the setup name my pc, i set my local gigabit card up on the 192.168.0.1 and then set internet connection as dedicated, i select static on for the type, i then put my external network card ip in 192.168.0.2 and set the gateway as the router 192.168.0.3 and leave the dns blank.

This does not work.

If i just put it to server only mode, it works fine even if i use my non gigabit card.

I dont configure anything else.

Thanks

That's not surprising. That's an invalid configuration. Try setting your local NIC to 192.168.1.1, and leave the other settings as they are. Your internal and external NICs must be on different IP networks - you have them configured on the same network - 192.168.0.x.

Hi Charlie,

Can you tell me if SME 7.1 supports PPPoA internet connections? I know that here in the US we use PPPoE and that is supported out of the box :D or cable modem, again works first time, every time :D Just curious because I have never been able to get it working with PPPoA

Thanks for all your help.

Now working, I was confussed because it used to work like that so not sure why it doesn't now.

Sorry about not puttin up my config :: LESSON LEARNED ::

Set my local to 0.1 external 1.1 and router 1.2.

Another problem which i have posted on linksys is my router offers dhcp relay. It asks for an ip to put it to 1.1 or 0.1 doesn't work.

Any ideas why that might be? I trust dhcp relay is anything that connects to the router (mainly wireless) will get its ip from the server (i.e the address i put in as the relay).

Thanks

Hi k0r54,

Lets recap on your situation, I don't understand how your server can be connected to the router using 2 NIC's and the same IP range :? Either your server should be connected to the router as server/gateway using 1 NIC and the router in bridge mode so it acts like a modem (or put the server in it's DMZ). The server should then be connected to the LAN using it's second NIC and a separate switch/hub and a different IP range with the LAN computers connected to the same switch/hub  :D Or your server should be connected to the router using one NIC in server only mode and all the LAN computers connected the same segment :D If I understand you right you are connecting both server NIC's to the router  if this is right when the server is in server/gateway you have two routers because the server does everything your router does and they could both be acting as the DHCP server for the LAN  Can you just explain exactly what is connected to what, which device is set to DHCP server etc. and maybe we can sort it out

Del

Hi,

No the router I got is my wireless router aswell.

I have my adsl connecting to my router, which then connects to my external nic on my server. My internal gigabit nic then connects to my hub and to the rest of my network.

When I connect a laptop to the hub on the internal network internet works fine, its great.

It prob doesn't help I have a built in wireless on my router because it puts it onto the external network but anything connected wireless is not gettin an ip address from the server.

The server should be the only dhcp server on the network, the router is only set to relay to the internal ip 0.1

Thanks

Hi k0r54,

This is your problem:

If you go back and look at my first post you will see that I have had this problem and the only way to set up is to use a separate router or wireless access point  This will then put the wireless in the LAN segment not the WAN segment. Your router will work fine for the wireless if you put a wired router in place of it and then connect it to the rest of the network and delete the internet settings :D This is an expensive wireless access point but you already have it so why buy something else :D What are your reasons for wanting it in server/gateway mode? Couldn't you use it in server only and forward any ports you need to it from the router? My mates reason was to run sail with a remote extension, but before that he used his in server only and hosted email and web pages by using the port forwarding scenario. Good Luck,

Yeah i kept reading over that post but the dhcp relay was throughing me, I thought my router could do it :(. yeah it is an expensive router but I do have an old router that supports bridging so may use that and configure my wireless as an access point only - just a massive waste of money.

I wanted gateway on the server mainly for ease of use on the port forwarding and email but suppose I can do it in server only mode and leave the forwarding to router, just not what I wanted to do :(

Thanks for all your help though.

Then configure your server for server-gateway mode and put it in front of all your routers.

EG.:
Code: [Select]

Server-----Router------lan
                     \
                       \
                         wlan

This is my configuration.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

Have you compared the price of wireless access points and wireless/routers/modems. I think most of the cost is in the wireless part and with yours you get all that funky 'N' stuff.

Yeah,

I have got it set up now, I had to get my adsl2 modem out and have put my funky wireless router on the internal network as a access point.

Its good just wanted to avoid using a third device lol.

Thanks for all ya help though
