Stuck at "Creating Quota Files:"
« on: May 16, 2007, 04:43:18 PM »
Well my installation went fine, but now it seem stuck at "Creating Quota Files:" when it is booting.   These are 500GB sata drives that are in a mirror raid on tis server.  How long does this take cause its been hours...

Any luck waiting on those quota files? I have the same problem. First the formatting/file system process took 6 hrs to complete, and now the quota files are in process (8 hrs and counting...). The screen even went black after 20 mins, but there is still regular disc activity.

Hi

For both of you: you have some HDD problem (driver, phisical, controller). Do not continue to use your server without discover/fix/report here your problem.
Those steps should take 10min tops!

I have the same problem with the new machine (compaq sr5410f refurb with 1 sata drive) I just downloaded 7.3 - I can ^c the quota creation but then get errors about missing quota files - any idea what could be wrong / how to go about fixing it (boot option maybe?) ?

adding some infos from boot messages:

I see ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx
which sounds abnormal (I doubt it is so slow)
Using cfq io scheduler

later I see:
ata: 0x1f0 IDE port busy
ata: conflict with ide0
ata1: DUMMY
ata2: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x170 ctl 0x376 bmdma 0xFA08 irq 15

Should I change some BIOS settings or boot options maybe ?

Just for info: I'm able to boot ubuntu server 8.04 and fedora 9 - so I think the issue is the kernel is sme server 7.3 is too old; I wish there was some workaround though - any idea?

yes but by default both ubuntu and fedora don't setup Quota's
how may 500GB sata drives do you have did you setup the raid option with SME own raid or did you do it in the BIOS of the PC if down in the BIOS try turning it off and use the SME software raid may help

and the other one check you bios and make sure that the sata is not ruuning in ide legacy mode it would be labled different in the compaq bios and i does not sound correct sata should not be running at UDMA/133 and poi mode is even slower it maybe a hardware problem between linux and the mother board chip set as it is quite new g31 chip set there maybe some problem with linux
