Server Won't Boot - Stuck
« on: January 08, 2008, 03:46:00 PM »
I have a 7.0 server that is having some serious problems and I'm not sure where to turn.

The server had been running for over a year without any issues and then something happened over the Christmas break. I'm assuming the power went down or something, but in any regard the thing won't boot all the way up. The computer itself physically starts fine and SME starts loading, but it hangs when starting one of the services. The service it hangs at is different every time so I don't think it is an actual service that is causing the problem. If I try to do a file system check (which it recommends doing) it always hangs on that as well. The server was running RAID.

Any thoughts or hints? How can I get command line access?

Hello,

You have different type of things to do...

If you want to have access to disk (to do a check disk), boot with the SME Server CD (press hold shift) or in the boot command type sme rescue (check the menu option or in the forum)...

Second, have you try to boot on only one disk at a time... Try the first one... Then if not working try the otherone... It possible one of them was defect !!!

To do some easy troubleshooting as well. I would try to replace the ram modules to se if this could have any impact for the situation. (It is my experience, at least from the old days, that ram modules that ram modules that start to degenerate can give some strange beahavoir and unstability, and later on stops the boot sequence on different stage during the boot sequence.)
